quick way to check battery your self is get some jumper cables and hook it up to another car. wait a few min then try turning it on. the other cars battery should be able to at least turn your motor. if it starts turning then your starter is good and battery is bad. might not be the best way to check it but it might work and if it does then you can be 100% sure its the battery.

Just to be clear, the click noise would most often mean the starter solenoid is bad. This is the component you need to tap with a hammer to see if it loosens up. But I think the solenoids are build in to the starter on an Evo anyway, so as far as you are concerned, if the solenoid is bad the entire starter is bad and needs to be replaced. Its really not that big of a job to change one, just get the front of the car up on some ramps / jacks and look around under there. Remove the plastic tray obviously. You'll see the really thick wires going to it, one red one black. The solenoid should look like a little cylinder hooked onto the main body of the started. If you cant find the solenoid just tap the body of the starter while someone else tries to turn the key.

seems like you battery is good so you can cross that off your list. that noise doesnt sound like a clicking noise though, sounds more like a whine.. im betting its you starter. sounds like its seized or jammed. try what the other guy said and hit it with a rubber mallet while cranking. its not hard to swap out so dont worry about it. all you do in unplug the power wire and there are 2 bolts that hold it in i think. quick job

Just my 2 cents, is that it could also be a bad alternator too. My wife's car previously just broke down on the a freeway. When I got there, when you turn the key to on, it wont crank or anything. I did hear some kind of buzzing noise, but not like a clicking noise from the starter. Luckily I was able to jump start it and drive it home and replace the alternator and it's working like a champ now.
