reliability
reliability
Ok so I am finally buying my first evo. I am looking at a grey 06 and I love it, but i have to ask what does everyone think HONESTLY about the reliability of this car? Yes I know it is a rally car so it holds up very well BUT if something is going to break what is it? What type of maintenance costs are there on this car? What do I have to do immediately when I buy it (it has 40k on it)? What do i have to do shortly down the road? I know what reviews from official magazines are going to say and what the factory says but I am asking you, the people who own these cars, the people who drive/abuse/love these cars to let me know what I am in for. I am buying this car one way or another but a heads up will really help me out. And before you say it yes I did search but I am trying to expand on what I found
Depends on what you do to the car will depend on its reliability ( that is sapose it is in good condition when you buy). If you don't do mods and take care of it with regular maintenance it most likeyly be very reliable for you. If you take your time and do mods well and right with quality parts it will be reliable too. But if you neglect it and buy all your mods from ebay it might not turn out well. And get yourself a good tuner
You'll be good for a little while. You're going to need to replace the timing belt and associated hardware soon. 60K is when it is supposed to happen I think.
The evo has what is called an interference engine. If the timing belt breaks the valves hit the top of the pistons and it will likely ruin the whole engine. So, keeping that timing belt in good order is very important.

Are you going to mod it? It's only as reliable as the installs of the parts. If it's stock, it's a pretty reliable car. Just don't get one with too many miles and you will be fine.

very reliable car as far as stock and doing all necessary maintenance! use good oil in both motor and trans and do your timing belt every 60k and youll be good! the only things that wear out early is the clutch!
yeah what JohnDoe said.....just start saving up for that 60k timing service now...it is pretty expensive....other than that the car is very reliable as many in here say.
It also helps to be in tight with a local shop, so if anything DOES happen, ppl arent trying to rob you....soooo many ppl get got here its not even funny.

I would say reiable yes and no. Really depends on the condition of your car when you buy it. brand new its like any car as long as you take care of it and do matience when due not a problem. Used car could have not been taken care of correctly etc. I always tell people have 2000-4000 ready when you buy the evo. Clutch replacement all fluids changed and missing parts like bolts and have it retune. Also you might buy somebody elses headache now once you get it up to par its like any car treat it right and your good. If you use and abuse the car make sure you have use/abuse money to go with it

Once you start modding it there is always going to be the potential for issues, for basic BPU upgrades you should be fine and from there it all really depends on the driver for the most part and how they treat their vehicle.
If you launch the car a lot then you can basically count on the drive train breaking in one or all spots, toasting the clutch especially if it is a stock piece which is crap, transfer case, tranny...
If you drive aggressively then kiss your brakes goodbye, and these are not cheap to replace by any means, stock replacement on all four corners rotors and pads will run you about $600-$800.
Maintenance isnt that cheap on this car so if that is going to be an issue or concern for you then I would suggest rethinking buying an Evo.
At the end of the day it really comes down to what mods if any you are going to do and how you treat the car...
