Help: Rear Diff or TCase
time to get a shepard t-case. www.sheptrans.com
Noob drivetrain poster here; I have the same noise as the OP and took it into the dealership when I had my 60k service done to get some insight. I mentioned that all the symptoms of a dying T-case (death whine while in 5th gear and above 50mph), but they are telling me the noise is coming from the transmission when they had it on the lift in gear. The previous owner had a evo 8 transmission installed before I bought it so I don't know about the quality of work they did. Also the dealership noted that there were no issues during shifting and all the fluids checked out ok. Any idea if dealership would be wrong?
Definetly t-case for op. Like the other guys have said you can drain the fluids and look for shavings. There is also an inspection cover that can be removed to try and visibly check it out. Although it is very hard to tell anything unless you know what your looking for. I would definetly recommend you give Shep. trans. a call. They have several different packages to choose from. I think they range from several hundred dollar rebuilds to the bullet proof Quaife that they have on sale right now for 1350.00. You can't beat that price for the Quaife with a lifetime warranty. Mine is already headed to Shep as I write this.

Thanks, I think I'll talk to a local transmission shop to see what they think as well. One other thing, I think I have an issue with my front left axle (since my struts checked out fine) as it makes a small clunking noise when turning right. Would this be related to my current transmission issue?
that's a bit excessive. the manual states level checks every 15k with changes every 30k. unless you track the car constantly, that's good enough.
unless you're going 5-6 thousand miles between your oil change intervals that might be a bit of overkill. Not that it a bad thing, better that than the alternative. I would suggest 10k to satisfy any OCD you might have, 15k as a rule. Same with rear diff and tranny.
thanks, that just turned down my OCD, but i still need to change it soon
i know was quite overexaggerating ahahah, i do mine at every 3 oil changes (3500miles X 3 =10500)
every two oil changes?? seems excessive. id say once a year or 15k.
