Help: Rear Diff or TCase

Hey, so I have a problem. There's this sorta like whining noise, or high-pitched grinding type of noise that you cant really hear on low speeds but gets louder the faster you go and is pretty loud on the freeway, louder than my exhaust. It started whining on my drive from Cali to MN.. Anyways I guess I always thought it was the rear differential and thats what other people told me, but recently i thought what if i buy the diff and it turns out to be the transfer case instead. or something else. I would love to say that its like an axle or something like that, but its not. And I dont really know anything about all this drivetrain stuff so any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like a classic TC symptom to me.

It sounds like a TC issue. Pull the drain plug and check for any metal shavings in the fluid. If there are you will need a rebuilt TC soon. If there is no metal at all, change the fluid and see if that helps.

Those seem like tcase noises. You can post a video so we can hear it to be sure.

Mine started to whine after a auto x event. I'm pretty sure its the Tcase also. I drained the fluid and there was a lot of metallic substance on the drain plug. I was running Amsoil fluid for about 3k miles. What causes the death whine? The metal flakes you talk about are these like chunks or what?

Yep, definitely the T-Case, you should get that rebuilt ASAP. Cheaper to rebuild it now then wait until its ruined. When you get it rebuilt make sure you read and understand this link. TRE FTW

I thought that once the case started whining that the cores were bad? but yea buddy if u hear it actually grinding then your going to find yourself if your lucky on the side of the road with all four wheels locked up. it happened to me one time it basically felt like i started smashing on the brakes 4 or 5 times until i came to a stop from 60 mph very quickly and it sounded wonderful. Didnt crack the case though

sheptrans.com or teamrip.com or buschurracing.com (bushwacker) would be your three premier shops that rebuild them

the main problem is that people think that the oil in this TC will last 100kmiles like my granny auto trans who has 150 000kmiles on the cluster and never changed that oil

TC oil should be change at every 2 engine oil changes...
