Advice FP Red vs. Fp Black
Advice FP Red vs. Fp Black
Hey all, i have a 2005 evo8 GSR, current mods are cosworth m2 cams, adj. cam gears, walboro 255 fuel pump, injen intake and UPIC, ets 3'' FMIC, aftermarket LICP, Buschur built 3" TBE, straight pipe, MBC, HKS dli2 ignition amp, ACT clutch and flywheel, and probably a few minor things im forgetting. I am thinking about going bigger. I want either fp red or black, with obviously larger injectors (880's or 1000's i think) and most likely a ported/polished ex manifold(or possibly aftermarket). The motor tranny and tcase are all stock, and im not really looking to upgrade them right away. So which turbo should i go with? Fp red with higher boost, or black with lower boost, i want good power but the motor in one piece! Thanks!
Even with all your mods listed its a pretty broad question to ask, it all depends on your goals...
Personally I dont even consider the Red an option when doing an upgrade like you, its either the HTA Green (which rocks might I add) or the Black...

I recall reading a lot of posts that state the FP Black really comes "alive" at higher boosts.. so if your power goals and turbo selection point toward a Black, that might be a good thing to keep in mind.
thats what i was worried about.. it seems with the red i can get more of its potential safely, where as if i try to get the fun spot with the black in higher boost, im gonna be in trouble.
The difference in responsiveness between the Red and Black is very minor (I've had both). If you want response, go smaller. If you want power, go with the Black. The Red is caught in the middle with compromised response and power.
I'm in the same boat, my mods a very similar to you, 272 HKS cams, ARP head studs,LICP, walboro, ACT 6 puck clutch, rebuilt tranny, buy i'm concern about my engine( 59k on the clock), if is going to be able to tolerate the boost that a FP black will produce.
Or just play safe and get an EVO 9 turbo or green and be happy and safe at 400 hp.
Thanks in advance for your input

Its more so the torque that isn't that good for the stock bottom end. But around 500whp is the general area where safety of the stock engine comes into play. But it is also determined by the tune on the car seeing there are a few cars with over 600whp on the stock block.. but who knows how long they will last
On my low boost map 25psi I'm at 450-465whp with FPBlack
And its just getting started at that psi. Lol
Do the Black keep her at low boost till you upgrade other parts. But you'll need different oil for the black and your engine won't be built yet, **** I'm all confused.
Get the green, have fun with it, when you build your engine sell the green and get the black. Then you can use the correct oil.

i have the black and do like it alot, yes it is true the black shines big in the higher rpm range, turbo lag between the 2 is very similiar, obviously the red will spool faster but onyl by maybe 200th rpms, which isn't a great deal, your talking another similiar set up would jump a whole bumper or hood length on you before yours kicked in, then you'd blow by. Another thing to consider is porting and coating the hotside, these sort of supporting upgrades do help the black spool up fast, and faster by maybe 200th of an rpm, not much but things like that would help you spool as fast as a red, other such things that could help spool faster possibly could be switching to speed density, however i only know very little when it comes to SD, only thing i know is there is no air flow restriction like MAF, good luck.
I agree with everyone else it all just depends on what your trying to accomplish. I say go black and u wont go back. youll have room to grow jsut dont over do it or youll be building your motor a lot sooner than you thot.
Green if you want to keep her as a nice daily driver, FP black if you really want to run a lot of power.
If your power goals are under 450whp theres no reason to get the FP black, just get the HTA Green.
