Glad you are working this out.

But my main concern here is this:

Why do we(the customer) go to get a tune and find out the tuner did not do a boost leak check?? I would have serious questions about the integrity of the tuner? Does he know what he's doing?

It's kinda like being the captain of a submarine and finding out at depth, you are taking on water.

This is not directed at any one person, just my .02

I kind of felt the same way, its a shop though so they really didnt want to work on it during the tune. They have a flat rate tune ammount for first time tune so if they were working on it they wouldnt be getting paid for it. They replaced 2 of my hose clamps while on the dyno but when it started to leak coolant they pulled it off the dyno right away. They fixed my coolant leak for free and gave me 4 spark plugs for free. They only charged 100 for the tune as well.

The shop was more then willing to work on it, just not for free.

The EGR vacuum hose behind the intake manifold will always pop out if you run on higher boost. Only way to fix this is to zip tie that hose or cramp it with something. This is very common on evo 8 and 9

Well its zip tied right now. Went to lunch with the car and everything feels fine. Ive never owned a DOHC motor but if the timing was off on the cams I think I would be able to notice. Will still check tonight.

Heres my outlook on this, as I recently had my car go thru some problems on the dyno with the tuner... If your car is there for a tune, then thats all hes supposed to do. Tune the car. Did you ask for him to fix something? or say (in my case) that you forgot the siphon tube on the new double pumper, so you have low fuel pressure?

Hes being paid by you, and made the appointment thinking all he has to do is tune. Not go over the car. You really shouldnt bring the car in for a tune with problems with it, UNLESS theres a reason behind it. And saying im lazy isnt a good one. If they do something on the car to FIX it, then you bet your *** there going to charge you for it. And if they dont, you really should cover them with a nice green thanks!!

I do understand where you guys are comming from, but like i said, if you called saying there was problems and after they were fixed you needed a tune.. It might be a different story!

Either way, good luck OP!!

Check timing. sounds like its a tooth off or you have a serious vacuum leak.

Not yet, my boost gauge is only reading -3lbs of vacuum. I have the boost gauge hooked up to the j-pipe nipple. The one right off of the turbo. Should this see vacuum or is -3lbs accurate since its like 2 inches away from the turbo?

I'm not saying that he/she shouldn't charge for fixing the car or even charge for a pre-test before tuning.
But, think about it. The car has a problem, after running the first dyno, shouldn't it be evident that there is a problem. Especially if this is a good tuner. Pull the car off and tell the customer to get it fixed(just incase he doesn't work on them).

I would rather have a tuner tell me that there is something wrong, then have him run my car 3-5 times on the dyno saying, you have a problem after he beat the hell out of it

Some of the guys out there now(customers and tuners), have no mechanical ability.

Well the coupler between the licp and the itnercooler blew off the first pull. Second pull we knew something was up, did a quick look over everything. Third pull it started leaking coolant. We turned the MBC in a bit after the 2nd so I believe he was expecting a different result from that.

Not even close, you should be seeing 15-20 vacuum.

Ok so I probably have a vacuum leak? How would a boost leak down not see a vacuum leak though? Same concept correct? Is there a solenoid maybe opening when the car is running thats letting air right out of the manifold? Car idles fine, and pulls fine. It says -3 at idle and if I bring the car to 4000rpm and let off it goes to -3.

This thread is so bad.....

The J-pipe off the turbo shouldn't have any vacuum in it. The car sure as he'll won't have -15 to -20 unless it's under decel in gear.

A tuner has NO responsibility to fix or check anything on a car that comes in for a tune. The dyno is for tuning, not repairs. $300 per hour on the dyno, I don't think you want your car fixed while it's sitting on the dyno.

Your car is so far down on power itnhas to be a major leak.

Ok talked to the tuner today about the situation. He said its more then likely not waste gate flutter but more then likely compressor surge. He said he cant be sure without seeing the car. He wants me to bring it back down this weekend so we can finish the tune. I didnt get around to checking the timing on the car but will tonight. He also confirmed that off the j-pipe there should be low to no vacuum

Of course, he said in idle the car was only reading -3 vacuum. There is obviously a leak somewhere or something is not connected properly.
