turbo.. pop... ??

ok ok so i know this is likely the millionth.. if not more threads on this?? but i am soooo effing lost right now, i'm seeing a billion diff. answers/suggestions, and seemingly each with a completely diff. set up.
so please please please i BEG!!! lend me a hand here!!! i'm going retarded trying to piece all of this information together! heres my story...

i JUST bought my 04 GSR.. the car is in EXCELLENT shape! however my last car being a run of the mill lancer ES (2004) this new car is a whole new ball game, and as such i know almost nothing about turbo's and the lot.. i desperatly am trying to soak all the information i can...

ok so driving it home on the looooong trip, of course i'm gonna play a little, see what she does.. i work up through the gears noo prob at all.. until i hit fourth.. at around i'd say.. 5000.. the turbo or something in that vicinity made a freakin crazy POP or backfire sound.. and i was literally almost thrown into my windshield.. heh not a joyous occasion to say the least with my freshly bought toy.. but anyways she jerked like stupid for about a second? and complete loss of the spool up.. and then everything was back to normal (of course foot was completely off the gas the second it happened)... so i wanna know.. wtf happened??? it did it 2 more times on the trip, and the last one.. made the "service engine soon" light pop up. this bothers me. i've been driving like a granny since.. and since then the light has magically dissapeared again.

what it's running... as far as i can tell.. i see a turbo/back apex-i system, NO cat, and perhaps a testpipe? i'm told it has a CEL welded in. a fujita intake, and IC pipes. and megan track c/o's ... other then that she's stock... no boost cntrl.. not even a guage (workin on it) .. im planning on hitting up a shop tomm. to see if i can get a poss. code reading to narrow in maybe a lil better...

ANY suggestions and/or ideas.. would be GREATLY appreciated.. and again i apologize for the likelihood of recurrance... but seriously im lost! i am a very very small fish in a huuuge pond right now.. and need SOMEWHERE to turn and figure this out.. naturally i figured you guys may be able to lend some advice my way..... i hope.

i've read alot already.. boost cut, fuel cut, spark plugs, intake vs exhaust, ic pipes, cold weather (yes it was about -8 celcius) wastegates, bov's.. as i said im lost.. please help..

sounds like u need a tune. those mods that u have make the engine breath easier thus its boosting a lil higher than what its suppose to. During the tuning session they will be matching the boost ur seeing with the correct amount fuel needed and all the goodies that are part of tunning.

if ur looking for some general turbo info, u should look up turbo tech 101, 102 and 103 on garrets website.

Sounds like it could be a tuning issue. Get the tune checked out

My guess is fuel cut.

Mine is doing it now with the weather turning colder. I've heard stories of people hitting it even without a boost controller. Most of the time it seems like the test pipe is the common culprit. First things first, I would get a wideband and boost gauge. Then save up for a nice tune which will probably solve all your problems.

thank you for the input guys, seriously! like i said, this is a big untertaking i've taken upon myself. i already have a boost guage ordered and i will be ordering a boost controller as well ASAP. Also i will start looking for a reputatable shop right now, since it is winter comming up around the bend here, i wanted to tune it down anyways, i don't think theres any sense in running it's full potential on ice lol

yea that kinda makes sense.. colder, denser air.. computer doesn't know what to do with it per say. Just scares the bejeezus outa me! one thing i've come to notice though.. and am kinda starting to enjoy... the attention you get with the car.. simply going to get a coffee.. ahaha i dunno how "universal" that is with other areas... but up here.. i've seen maybe... 2 or 3 other 8's i find it's either one of two looks you get... the " omg i can't believe im in the presence of an evo...." or the "WTF!! is that weird looking lancer with the funny radiator???" lol LOVE IT!
