Question sooo whats broken lol (pics)

so i think this is the timing belt cover coming off. i heard weird noise from the motor and found this. there is a missing bolt and its coming off hitting the timing belt. and it seems like if i put a bolt through this, it would not line up....

is this a piece of the timing belt cover coming off?
if so can i get one of those clear after market ones for direct replacement? and why is the hole not matching up? did i lose something?

I would take the entire timing belt cover off until you find a bolt to replace the missing one with. I would also check the condition of your timing belt to be sure that it hasn't been damaged by contacting the cover repeatedly. Lastly, you seem to have a lot of oil on and around your timing belt. You should check to see where that is all coming from, perhaps bad seepage from the valve cover. Any Mitsu dealer can get that bolt for you as well.

After looking at the pic more...there is a lot of oil further down the side of the engine. May be something more serious, unless you recently blew your dipstick out.

What?? The alternator bracket is right below the timing belt cover, you can clearly see it in these pictures with the bolt in it. The one he is pointing at is absolutely for the upper timing belt cover.

+17 pull it apart and inspect, Serpentine belt needs replacement at the very least. See if the bolt ended up in timing cover and damaging that belt. If ANY damage to that belt replace timing belt and tensioner as well...

Check for that leak too

The hole prolly doesnt match up because the tbelt covers get warped from engine heat. This has happened to every dsm ive owned.

+107 on taking the cover off and giving it the run through. I did a timing belt and water pump on mine a couple weeks after i bought it (with 60k), just because i didnt trust what had, or hadnt been done to it in the past.

Also, change you serp belt for the love of god man!

The cover you are referring to goes underneath the top cover. That is why it does not line up. You will have to remove your top cover and install it on top of the cover that is loose. It has been like that since someone assembled it incorrectly. The bolt and washer you need is a 6x1.0 mm twenty five mm's long

Don
