I agree with everything except the Mobil 1 point. Why would Mitsubishi and so many other members, shops, race teams and mechanics use Mobil 1 exclusively if it didn't protect engines? Are we talking only fully built and heavily modded EVO's only? Someone care to explain this as I would like a better insight on it.

thanks

its not the same in the racing world. they use a different formulation in those applications. now there is a racing formula clicky here which is NOT what is in the EVO from the factory.

im sure all the big name tuners will tell you the same. dont use the stock mobil 1. reason being is that the FACTORY FILL mobil 1 formulation, as some one else noted, was a deal made with the big name automakers to 'help the environment' by reducing the amount of additives in the oil itself...mainly ZDDP.(zinc dialkyldithiophosphate)

in the Hot Rod world, there was a study about all the camshaft and bearing failures happening when people were using mobil 1. what they found was the reduction of additives used to protect the flat tappet engines. the ZDDP is the sacrificial additives inbetween the cam and lifters.

see here for article<----clicky

here is an excerp...

Ferner adds, "The zincreacts with the cam lobe's iron surface. That creates a sacrificialchemical coating strong enough to keep parts separated to reduce thewear." Although great for keeping a flat tappet alive, as an engine agesand develops blow-by, some of the additives flow out the exhaust wherethey can degrade oxygen sensor and catalytic converter performance.Faced with ever more stringent emissions standards and the governmentalmandate for extended emissions-control- system warranties, the OEMs gottogether with the motor oil makers and decided to reduce the amount ofZDDP in street-legal, gasoline-engine motor oils. After all, theyweren't needed with modern roller lifters and overhead-cam followers. The reduction first started in the mid-'80s, and it has been a gradualprocess, but the latest API SM and GF-4 specs have reduced ZDDP contentto such an extent that the new oils may not provide adequate protectionfor older, flat-tappet-equipped vehicles running nonstock, performancecams and valvetrains. And it will only get worse; projected future oilspec revisions will likely reduce ZDDP content even more.
hope this helps........

It can only flow enough fuel to support stock airflow.

I agree with most everything except for the cam choices... GSC S2s or Jun 272 copies FTW

I had no idea Mobil 1 was crap. This makes me want to change my oil immediately. Do the Amsoil or Eneos oils last longer than Mobil 1? I've been changing every 3k. Should I stay with a 10W30 synthetic, or is a different weight better for a daily driver?

Thanks!!! Everything is still stock except for a catback and air filter on mine, so safe for now I think.

you should mention that you have some great " how to" videos available that will help understand ecuflash and data logging. I agree that a tactrix cable should be one of the first items someone buys who is planning on modding their car

Why would one post make you want to change the oil you have been using for years. If you've been using Mobil 1 10w30 without any issues than I would keep using it. Personally, switching to another brand after using Mobil for so long could cause even more issues IMO. I can understand if your car is fully built and heavily modded, but to claim Mobile 1 isn't good for a stock Evo puzzles me.

Thanks for the post, it was an interesting read. I'll continue looking into this but for now I assume Mobil 1 is fine for mainly stock non built Evo's.
