On the EvoII the speedo is cable driven off the gearbox. The ECU takes its signal from the speedo to limit top speed. The speedo only signals the ECU when 180 is reached........it can't tell if its in kph OR mph.....only when 180 is reached.
This is a common modification in the UK where they are required to have the speedo in mph.The only reason I bothered to change the dial faces was because I need to have an eye on the 200KPH mark for Targa Newfoundland.
I could have just left the orginal kph speedo in place and just stuck the mph sticker to it as in the above.

thats FREAKING AWESOME. wonder if i could put a "light years" sticker on mine and time travel

180KPH = 112 miles per hour......which is the limit all Japanese cars are restricted to by their government.
The ECU would shut down the engine at this speed(112mph).
By tricking the speedo with the convertor I can now go up to redline or as fast as gearing will allow.....which is about 150ish.....miles per hour.
I've already tested it on a track,it works.I had to do the same deal on my last rally car....

That one had a full JDM powertrain swap, including the Japanese speed limiter.
wouldnt the ecu be reading the speed from a speed sensor regardless of what the cluster says.....
the cluster isnt limiting the speed, the ecu is. the ecu knows how fast the car is going regardless of the needle

As per my post above. The speedo is old school cable driven right from the gearbox....not from a speed sensor. The ECU gets its signal from the speedo(cluster).
Some people have just cut the wire from the speedo(cluster) going to the ECU,but I would perfer not to go hacking up the wiring.
