Unhappy Megan Coilovers Making Noise

Hey Guys,

I bought a Evo 8 and it came with Megan coilovers. It has less than 20k miles on it. My coilover is making clunky noise from the back. Megan website advise applying grease on it. I wasn't sure if that would work and if I do, how should I set the spring pre-load? Do I set it just so it barely turns or just tight(car is lowered)? Hope I don't have to take the whole thing out!

Please help!!!

Thanks in advance.

Tee

Push down the rear end and see if it bounces up and down. If the shocks are still good, it should just come back up and not bounce. If you see a small bounce, then they're shot or going out.

Had Megan coils when I bought my car and the front pillow ball mounts were shot. Clunking everywhere. The rear always clunked because both sides of the rear were shot too. It's hard to notice them while driving because the spring rates are so high.

If you want to try to set the spring up though, just hand tighten the lock nuts against the spring. The bottom lock nuts are mainly for height adjustment locking. Once the height adjustment is set, adjust the springs accordingly. You don't need to be cranking that lock nut against the spring too much. Just enough to not give the spring any play, pretty much, hand tightened.

don't know about coilovers (they operate basically the same) but it sounds like one of the shocks is blown.

we replaced the stock struts/shocks/springs on my friends alltrac with megan coilovers and his had that same clunk (would sound like you dropped a hammer on a control arm from 3-4 inches up, not a *thwang* noise but more a dull-ish thud of metal on metal) and it disappeared (his shocks were definitely bad anyways, so they needed replacing)

Yeah it kinda sounds like hammer dropped on control arm but if the struts/shocks are bad the back should be bouncy either pushing the rear or driving. Correct me if im wrong

Thanks

When I had mine installed the rear would make a similar noise when turning or exiting a dip, after a few days of driving with the setup the noise was gone. Try not to have your ride to lowered I noticed that by adjusting the damper the noise slowy went away.

The sound is from the perch nut is loose. Remove adjustment knob by hand. Open ended 17mm wrench and a allen wrench to hold shaft in place. Tighten nut and keep shaft from moving.

The back have about 2fingure space(top of tire to fender). Damper is set at 18.

find someone local with a stock strut or a coilover you can borrow and switch it out (brand doesnt matter, it's a short drive). if it still makes the noise, you know it's not the coilover

go on megans website. they have a whole section on how to set-up their coilovers. i would read all that and start there. never know what the previous owner did, so be sure and do it all yourself. then see if the sound is gone or not and go from there

Sounds like two things:

1. A loose topnut, allowing movements. Try tightening down te topnut.

2. The spherical bearing may be bad, and hence the clunking. I don't believe Megan offers rebuild parts.
