anyone take apart a engine harness??

The interesting thing is, I have cleaned it up MUCH more than that since that picture was taken.

Anyone that knows me has seen me working on it in a light colored long sleeve shirt, my arms burried in it, and come out without as much as a small bit of oil/grease on it.

Remember, a clean engine bay is a happy engine bay. Hahaha

yea my stock manifold wasnt a pain at all.. this bigger ams vsr is though.. can barely get my hand under there, tight squeeze! but i will try it the way u mention it.. only harness i need to leave extended would be the fuse and relay box harness over by the driver shock tower.. other then that it can be cut short and ran straight under the manifold

i just need to make sure it works right before cut MOAR wires.. so im going to be pulling the whole harness inspecting it to make sure no wires were left out and running it over top of everything and ran to its proper location

Ahh, OK, yes, the VSR would definately tighten things up a bit back there for sure!

You are correct about the extended harness. Beware there is a plug that sits just above the clutch slave cylinder (approx. location) that is I think an 8-12 pin plug, that you will have to pull wires out of, de-pin, shorten, and repin (EDIT, not repin, you will end up soldering these wires ends together, thus eliminating the big connector). It will eliminate the plug in its entirety...

Basically, as a forewarning, and I'm sure KevinD would agree, unless you have the patience and time to do this, It honetly would be better just left alone. I would for some reason love to do another one, only out of the car so I can do it even better than my first attempt at it. It would take me probably a month (I have many other projects going on too, non car related, house stuff, hence the month). Like a previous person mentioned, if I could land a harness for $50 on ebay, I would definately buy it just to be able to re-do what I have in there to make it PERFECT. Not saying mine is half assed, but there is only so much you can do with it leaving it in the car.

Just beware, if you decide to do it like KevinD and I did, its ALOT of work. Taking your time and being meticulous is your friend, along with a camera to take a picture of each plug's backside so you can see exactly how to reassemble it. I also went to the extent of spinning the wire bundles in my drill so I had twisted pair wiring to each individual sensor. If you zoom in my earlier picture, you can see what I am talking about..

I liked doing it, but for some reason I like electrical work and making harnesses. Must be the dumb side of me. Hahah

yeh im def down for the challenge.. always loved the wiring part of a car vs the mechanical getting dirty part ehehe..

but yea i will be asking you and KevinD alot of questions since you guy already have experience with this.. i already eliminated all but 4 wires from that big plug leaving what looks to be the starter ground and singnal wires to alternator and oil pressure sensor

i bid on a harness i found on ebay so hopefully i get it for cheap NO ONE OUTBID ME PLEASE

someone also mentioned that i could have possibly fried my ecu or crank sensor.. im tuned on ecu flash is there a way i can test to make sure all is okay?..

DAMIT I just saw that one on eBay and was contemplating going for it! Hahaha I was looking at the one for the 05... Make sure you bid on the right one, there's an 03 and an 05's on there... The 03's was stoopid expensive!

Also, notice that one of the connectors is broken, not a big problem since you have yours on your car...

BTW, you didn't fry your ECU, I would bet a nickel on that one. Once we get the cam position sensor fixed I would be willing to bet another nickel she will start right up.

You can say I know a thing or two about the engine wiring on an evo. PM me if you need to, I'd be glad to help. I'm in the process right now of customizing all my wiring and making a quick disconnect engine harness. It's not done yet.. another 2 weeks or so and it will be. Here are some progress pics.

well when i went in to fix and replace all the burnt wires i also changed and put in a new cam sensor but still wont start

i checked all fuses and none are blown especially the one in the interior fuse box #1 ignition coil

i also have a NEW crank sensor that i have yet to install because i heard its a PITA but hopefully get to that soon :/

If you are VERY careful, its not that bad. I replaced mine without removing the timing belt cover all the way. Just remove all the lower bolts you can get to (6 I believe you can access), and GENTLY pull the timing cover out enough to get your tools in there. I STRESS gently as you run the risk of breaking the cover in half. You will de-pin the connector, new and old one, and use the wires of the old one to pull the new ones through. The only small PITA is the little bendy tab thingy that hold the wires against one of the covers. You will need to stick a long screwdriver in there and gently push them open, and reclose them when the new one is in there. The crank position sensor is held on with two bolts, 10mm head, M6 thread bolt, and it's close enough to the bottom of the timing belt area you can access it with a standard box end wrench.
I did all of this basically on the side of the road when a rock fell down into the timing belt (No cam gear cover here) area and the trigger plate tried to shove the rock through the sensor. As soon as that happened, the car immediately shut off..

The funny thing about my car is that my timing cover broke, so I ordered a new one, and purposly cut it in half, and bought a piece of special trim that covers the cut. I can now remove the lower half of the timing cover and not have to remove the water pump pulley which I absolutely hate for some reason. I just can't get my fat hands in there to start those dang bolts, so I always end up removing that motor mount right there. Fat hands FTL.

If you are up for the challenge of re-doing your harness, looks like there are a couple of people here in this thread willing to help you now.. Good thing!

so the 05 harness cant be used for the 03 minus a couple of sensors?

thanks for that info... do i have to remove the crank pully and serpentine tensioner??

and yes i am up fo this challenge i will make a thread on that when i start it

Yes you have to pull the crank pulley and tensioner to fully remove cover. But those two are easy enough to take off.
