I feel screwed royally! What should I do??

Alright, I bought some parts to install in my car because I was hearing a funny noise.

I bought a new timing belt, balance belt, idler pulley, balance shaft pulley, timing pulley.

I brought it to the shop, and asked them to figure out what the noise was. They charged me like a normal shop to install these. They called me and told me my water pump was bad. I told them to go ahead, fix that. When I got the car back, it was still making the noise. They told me that it was the alternator making that noise, but the alternator should be fine, its just making noise.

I start driving home, and i notice that when I get on it, there was slight vibration, and when i pushed the gas, the engine would make a weird noise and vibrate badly. So I turned around to go back the the shop, and my car shuts down, and wont start.

I call the shop, and they send someone down to figure out when it wouldn't start. Turns out the alternator seized up, and wouldn't turn. So i had to pay them to break it down and pay for it again to get it fixed. Now im out about 1,000 bucks.

I leave and still feel the same vibration. I called them and they told me everything was fine, that the new belts are making the vibration or some things, that it would get better when the belts broke in. I couldn't really understand him, but I just decided to wait.

Well, vibration got worse, so I had a buddy take a look at it for me, and we lined everything up, and everything was lined up on the tick marks. But then he told me something about the balance shaft pulley can be lined up, but it can still be off by 180 degrees or something.

So I bring my car to a mechanic who was looking to help me out because I have no money to fix this. Come to find out the balance shaft WAS 180 degrees off, and to boot, the bearings in the shaft were burned out. He did me a favor, and got the new bearings.

He called me tonight, and told me that there is a bunch of metal shavings inside the motor now, but he isn't very sure to the extent of the damage.

now I don't know what I should do here? Should the shop pay to fix whatever is messed up? I can't afford an attorney, Im broke! What else can I do to get this right?

Short answer, no. You can ask them to cover parts and labor but I doubt they'll do anything You had someone else fix it (Even if they were more competent).

Welll if you got a RECEIPT for the work it was done, and they installed it 180deg. reverse, then its your case.

Simply call them up, say listen "You did the work, you screwed up and installed the part 180 .deg. wrong, and now my engine is damaged, and you need a rebuild paid by them".

I know you said you don't have money, but i'd try to dig some up, maybe try and do a little work on the side if its a must, but i'd take them to court if they don't agree to pay for a build. IF IN FACT your mechanic friend is correct and there is metal shavings in the motor / or motor is damaged, who knows how long it'll last. I'd def take this to court and invest your time and try to get something done here, don't just let this fly by.

And as for the future; "FIND yourself a GOOD mechanic and stick with him".

good luck...

As you've mentioned, you can also tell them "Cover parts and labour @ another shop" and we'll call it even, because they obviously have no clue what they were doing, and thats how your car got to this state to begin with.

You don't need an attorney to go to small claims court, and most of the time people don't bring lawyers.

Keep in mind the most you can sue for is $5,000 in small claims court.

Go after these douchebags, don't take it laying down and get lotsa pictures and evidence.

Yea ask the shop to cover the repair and parts at a more reputable shop or mechanic. If theyre not willing then take them to court.

I believe you don't need a lawyer if it is small claims court. Get crackin' on your research, bring your mechanic friend in to testify. Good luck.

they should have insurance to cover their mistakes anyways...there is a good chance they will just have insurance pay out rather than go through the hassle of court/arguing.

good luck either way, they are definitely responsible and should pay up

Yeah unless you paid cash only, you could get them to fix it.

Sorry to hear man! What shop was this so we all know to stay away? Also I would call them up and tell them the story and have the tech/owner meet you at the shop the car is at now and show them in person what happened and tell them you want your money back for labor cost and money to fix everything that is wrong or else you will have to take them to small claims court.
