Evo MR vs GSR
Evo MR vs GSR
I know the differences I think, but I was really set on buying an MR, my criteria was hard, but I've seem to stumble on a lot of 5 speed Evo's I just want some input from evo owners, as to what's not neccesarilly better but which one i should buy. To be honest I probably won't mod the car to hell. I just would like around 330HP or so. It's a daily driver and I am a new Manual Transmission driver. When I say new I mean brand spanking new. But anyway, I was just wondering Pro's and Con's of MR vs a GSR.
Part 2
Also I asked my buddy and he just came straight out and said no. But i figured I'd ask the guru's what they thought, I found a MR 05 GG for 20 grand. Most beautiful car I have ever seen. Modded lightly. HKS full Exhaust, Injen Intake, Oil catch can(forgot name), and a Greddy Turbo Timer. It was tuned at 350HP. I was thinkin wow! The horsepower I want the Trim level I want, the color I want, the year (only because i wanted the ACD) and the price i wanted! jesus i've struck gold. It's over in Virginia, and I'm going to Raleigh sometime this weekend, I was gonna see it and potentially buy it, but heres my dilemma remember how i said im a new manual driver? Well heres the kicker. Clutch was replaced, but unfortunately not OEM, it's a clutchmaster stage 3 disc. Well there's the problem.
My buddy did a quick google search and found a thread on here on how you guys hate the clutchmaster clutches. Plus my budddy said that it would be a pain in the *** to attempt to "learn" manual on a stage 3 clutch for daily driving. Me being in essence a noob had no clue if he was right or not. So yeah I dunno. So i figured I'd come and ask for your Evo VIII-IX and previous owners opinions.
Thanks guys!

If your a greenhorn when it comes to a manual I wouldn't even bother looking at an Evo right now. Learn to drive a manual on something else first, plus driving an Evo with a aftermarket clutch with no previous manual transmission experience your going to either A burn that clutch up really quick and/or B Blow the transfer case and/or Transmission as well specially if you learning to pull out on hills. Honestly man not trying to shoot down your hopes and dreams at all just trying to save you from having an expensive a** repair bill, learn to drive a manual on a civic or something maybe a buddy's car first before going out and dropping 20k on a car you technically dont know how to drive yet.
I'm not too familiar with Clutchmaster clutches, but from their website it seems that it's a Kevlar single-plate. I bought my MR with an Exedy MM022HD twin-plate ceramic and it wasn't exactly the easiest to learn on, but I'm better with all clutches now. The damn thing is so on/off that I can handle anything with more slipping. It took me about 2 weeks to get it down and numerous stalling at lights and stop signs, but it's not impossible. From what I understand is that Kevlar needs to be properly warmed up prior to driving for best performance so you would probably want to switch it out if you got the car. Just my $.02, good luck!
you really should search...differences have been covered a million times BUT here is a little input
the 6 speed is the smoother transmission and honestly, if you'll be keeping the wheel torque below 350 then the 6 speed is fine AS LONG AS YOU DON'T ROAD RACE IT (long periods of high heat in high gears will be the death of it)
the 5 speed is more prevalent and more sought after for racing applications...there are also many more aftermarket options as far as building one up
I've had both...for daily driving on moderate power...I'd vote the 6 speed
I have no experience with that specific clutch but learning a manual on an aftermarket clutch wont be fun and you'll definitely heat it up and glaze the disc...so plan on replacing it
awd cars are more difficult to learn on in general because they require more precision and modulation of the clutch

If you happy with 330 hp then you should get it but "are you sure it will be enough after a month or two" As you get used to your car you gonna want more and more power.
Now, if you want everything that the MR offers and the SE should be your best choice( it been discussed on here many times already). I never owned a stage 3 clutch and I can't tell you anything about it. You should test drive the car for yourself and see how it is or one of your friend who knows how to drive one. Good luck anyway. Hope what you want will come true!!

well I kind of lied. I do know how to drive manual. Know the concepts and I used to own an SS Cobalt for about 4 weeks before we sold it for the Q7. It's just been 2 years since I have even touched it. Thats the dilemma.
By the way search bar will be used more often, thanks for that.

I learned how to drive manual in my evo. The clutch was about gone when I got it so of course I killed that thing the rest of the way.
I put a Clutchmasters in mine after that. Not the stage three just the one slightly more than stock. I finished learning on that clutch and it is still in there three years later.
Learning in the evo was a pain at times, emberassing at times, and a little intimidating at times. But I got through it. If you are going to learn it might as well be in the car you are going to drive.
I still might not be the best (meaning I have not ever attempted a launch in the car, because I do not race), but I drive it fairly well I think. The hardest part about learning was to get the car to move forward without getting it to fly forward.

i wouldn't trade in my mr for a gsr.
no modding for me besides an exhaust and the 6 speed is great for my driving style, which is 95% hwy. gears are super smooth and the difference in styling is to my liking. everything from the bilsteins to the bbs wheels. but if you have a mod problem, no reason to get an MR as everything that was good will be replaced in some way or another.

I wanted an MR more than anything, but I blew my transmission road racing at 400 whp and replaced it with a 5-spd Shep trans and I am so much happier with the 5-spd. Either GSR or MR is probably fine for the power level you want. I wouldn't worry too much about the folks telling you to not get the car without being familiar. I bought my first manual car without having a real clue how to drive it, and drove it off the lot. Sure you will stall it a bit, but you will be alright. If you can, find a buddy with a manual and take it around a parking lot a bit before you pick up the Evo.
So would you still recommend staying away from the stage 3 clutch? I dont know I'm still going to see the car this weekend, and ooo wee is it nice from what i know about it. I really appreicate the responses guys.
One question I did have though, anyone notice the passenger front brembo, looked brown to me, is'nt that the sign that its going out or something.
