quick question on locking oil pump while doing timing belt

I am doing a buddies timing belt and a bunch of other stuff including cams etc. I first decide to do his cams and put everything to top dead center and took tension off the timing belt and completely removed it then went on to the cams. Now i was looking over the timing belt how to and was reading thru it and from the 2 i read they explained to first lock the oil pump with a flathead thru the bolt behind the down pipe then proceed to take off the belt. So did i mess up by removing the belt first and not locking the pump? or how should i proceed? Please let me know. thanks!

If you didn't turn the oil pump sprocket it should be okay. Otherwise, the factory supplied inspection hole is one way to establish that the shaft is in the correct position.

I don't really know if it didn't spin or not I wanna make sure it's in the correct position so what do I have to do? With the bolt out is there only one way in the shaft which the screwdriver can be put in?

Yes, take the bolt out and see if the screwdriver fits in 60mm deep.
usually if it goes in that far you are okay. If you can't even get the screwdriver in at least an inch, you are 180 out on the mark and you will have to rotate the pump drive gear again.

With the timing mark lined up, the manual says to use a phillips screwdriver 0.31 inches in diameter. If it can be inserted 2.36 inches or more you are good to go.

The balance shaft will be in one of two possible positions with the timing marks lined up. Only one is correct.

Yes, just make sure all three marks on the three lower pullies are lined up,and the two at the top by the Valve cover..

give your car the shaft through the plug you removed. it it goes in, your all good

Good luck with everything. Timing belts can be tricky. From the looks of it, I hope you guys are doing cam and crank seals along with the belt.

Another easy way to make sure your in phase is to turn the oil pump sprocket so the mark on it is straight up then let go. If it wants to spin clockwise (to the right) its 180 out if it wants to spin CC (to the left) your golden line marks up and install and tension belt
