I am shooting for 400whp/wtq. Why? I figure if you have the $$$ to do it and you think its fun why not. I had a 08 CBR1000 that was putting down 189hp 79tq to the ground. I damn for sure couldnt use all that power on the streets but it was nice to have when you rolled that throttle over. If I want a reliable DD ill take my motorcycle or get a 110 hp civic.

I think it all comes down to what you use the car for. A car with less power is a lot easier to manage around an autocross track...just floor it and steer. If you have around 400 hp and tourqe you cant do that if you expect to get good times and have to get really good at throttle control. My personal car puts down 401hp and 452 lb ft of tourqe on the evo m virtual dyno and thats plenty of power for me. I hate turbo lag and when i was building my car I figured out a hp number I was shooting for and tried to go with the smallest tubo to get close to that number.

This ^^^^^^

It requires larger and larger amounts to get the smile. Around 630 it gets to where it will blur your vision on a roll and spin in 1st and 2nd even with 265s. 400 or so will only blur your vision on a launch (around a 1.65 60') and do a pretty good job of putting you in the seat on a roll.

Yup, that's all it takes.

its all personal preference. some people want a drag car so you need more hp or some want a autocross car so it would be less. still others just buy the car for the purpose of it being a car. as for the legal problems that can come well thats why there are tracks so in the hopes people dont do things on the road. its like anything else, you own a cellphone and most people still drive and talk on them even though it is agianst the law in many places.

Do you guys think that 400WHP is practical? That was what I was aiming at. However I make about a 40 mile round trip commute from school, work, and home. All highway miles. I was thinking of just switching to E-85 and get around 350WHP.

Mods
-TBE
-BR Exhaust Manifold
-HKS Intake Pipe w/ filter

As an autocrosser, I'll weigh in here.

There is a thing as "too much power," but most people will hit the "too much power for YOU to handle" limit first.

Thinking from a track/autocross aspect, you obviously don't want a huge, laggy turbo as you want a broader tq curve. But aside from that, is 400 hp usable at autocross? Sure. What about 500? Probably. If you learn to control the power the car has, you can take advantage of it when it CAN be used. Modulating your right foot can do wonders to bring a car under control, no matter the power it puts down.

When I started autocross, my car was around 320 awhp. I couldn't control it. I actually de-tuned the spool time to keep the car more tame coming out of corners. Now, I'm pushing closer to 385 awhp (on E85 and 29 psi) and I've got the boost coming in as soon as possible. It hits like a ton of bricks, but only if I want it to.

Sure, there are courses where I can't really use the full power of the car, but others where I can. If I dialed back the power I'd be handicapping myself.

So, in short, power is only as usable as you make it. With more time behind the wheel you will get used to it and learn how to manage it if you work at it.

nice old thread haha.

it all depends on your goals i guess. some people only care for drag racing, some only care for autocross, and others only care for dyno numbers.

personally, i stepped away from the racing scene a while ago. i just like wrenching on cars. i have certain goals for hp that i would like to achieve, but in the end, i just care about turning wrenches and enjoying the whole process.

Hahaha, yes, NICE OLD THREAD! This baby is from 2003. It's funny how back then shooting for 400-500-600 hp was BIG power! Still an interesting topic though.

Too much power? I don't know if there is such a thing, if there is I haven't experienced it yet and I've experienced 1458 engine dyno'd actual horsepower.

I've autocrossed Project White which made 520 whp/500 ft lbs of torque here and did quite well in it. Two weeks ago I dyno'd my Shelby Mustang which makes about 550 hp at the flywheel, on drag radials IN THE RAIN and was the 2nd quickest car in the rain in SM class.

Don't forget a throttle greatly varies how much power the car puts to the ground. Dual stage boost controllers, same thing.

I intend to autocross my RS this summer and it's run a best of 9.04 at 159 mph, going for 8's now.

Haha. Read this whole thread. ^^^^Definately one of the more funny comments on here.

I went from almost stock to 400awhp on a super conservative tune in one modding splurge. Id definately say I need more. I guess for me, its an addiction.

How'd you get that kinda power out a fireblade?

I like having that power because I've never had it before.

400-450 kinda seems the norm these days.
