EVO IX possible blown engine/new build!

So the other day I found some horendous rattle in my engine. sound seems to be coming from the motor. gets really loud when the car is under a load but idle isnt so loud. I took the valve cover off and found no obvious damage to the cams or the valves. Im not even close to being an expert on these cars or really know what I am looking for but I am concerned I have to go further down the motor which worries me that I might have a destroyed engine. So this is what I am going to do. I am going to make this car into a 500whp beast for a summer project. Starting with an engine swap. what kind of expenses am I looking at for a new Mivec engine and where should I start? I am very new to this extensive work but my roomate has done a full build before so he is helping.

Drop the oil pan and you might find gifts.

Sounds like a rod knock, but hard to say unless I could actually hear what you're talking about. Time to build a motor! Let me know if you need any help

If you remove the oil fill cap when the engine is running do you see smoke or is there excessive airflow coming out? Its a quick easy check to see if your getting blow-by. If you do this have a rag handy as you my get splashed with some oil.

Some airflow is normal, smoke is not.

A compression/leak down is a more precise way of checking for damaged piston rings, valve seals etc.. keep in mind this not tell you anything about the condition of the crank bearings.

As stated above you would need to drop the oil pan to inspect the bottom end.

First thing I would do is drain the oil into a clean pan and see if there are any signs of debris.

I would love some experienced help with this project but like the lack of tuners problem in montana there is also a lack of mistubishi knowledge or performance car knowledge period. I can send a few pics of what I find and possibly take a recording of the engine noise

Are you aware of just how much this is actually going to cost you? To put things into perspective, a fully built motor alone from BR is $5,000. Just letting you know...good luck bro.

He could get it done for much less than 5g's. Buy a motor from a crashed car for less than a grand and then build it with the parts you want and the machine shop of your choice.

Either way its not cheap, for some of us anyway.

So you want to fix your engine or start from scratch or build another one and swap it in? or just do the simplest/cheapest solution?

Do like everyone else said, drain the oil into a CLEAN container and see if you see anything like glitter or abnormal in there, doesnt hurt to run a magnet through it too. Do a compression test/leakdown test if you can
