Transmission Woes :(
Hi Everyone. Need some help with my Evo 9 MR. Just a little story...
I had another Evo 9 MR around this time last year, 2 months into it, clutch and transmission failed. New TD clutch and new transmission but then said screw it so I sold the evo.
Fast forward, got the Evo bug again and bought another one. Made the mistake again of buying an MR. Not even a month into it, the transmission fails
Here's what happen...
Driving home on the highway (5 gear was a little notchy when I got it), car was in 6th, going about 70 mph, and it pops out of 6th. I get back in 5th and back into 6th. When pulling into 6th, you can no longer feel that you're pushing it into gear but that its just there.
Drove home fine (1,2,3,4,5 gear) and left in nuetral in the driveway. Woke up in the morning to go to work and it won't shift into any gears with the car on and off. I'm pushing the shifter with all my might into any gear and it wont shift out of nuetral. I check the cables under the dash, looks fine; check the cables under the hood, looks fine and is not binded. Try moving the shifter's on the trans by hand and its not moving.
My thoughts lead me to believe that something fell off 6th gear when it popped out of gear and when the car was off, it settled in the trans and is not locking up the gears somehow.
Searching this site, I found 2 posts from the car's 2 owners ago -username (mmolch2)
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...th-gear-2.html
I contacted him when I first bought the car last month and he swears the trans never had issues. lol.
But anyways, any thoughts? I'm thinking to go 5 speed (too broke to get a shep right now) or stay 6 speed or just rebuild the current one? or maybe it's not the trans but something else such TOB? Clutch? but I doubt it.
Thanks in advance

Just went through this bro and it was such a pain to track down the problem. My car went into 1-5 but i suddenly lost 6th out of no where. Didn't pop out like you said but i just lost it and no matter what it would not go into 6th at all like it wasn't there but 1-5 and reverse were fine. So i though shifter linage. Adjusted for hours with no luck. Take it to my tranny guy he re checks the linkage, and pulls out the hub assembly on top of the transmission and it works fine. So he had to just tear down the tranny. Turns out the 5/6 hub slider was burred and would not allow me into 6th. ~230$ from mitsubishi. Guy cut me a great deal on labor so it was about a 550$ fix. Alot cheaper than a 5 speed swap and i haven't had a bit of trouble out of the tranny since! good luck man.

Thanks for sharing your story. I believe that something is binding inside the trans not allowing me to shift at all. At this time it'll give me an excuse to go 5 speed. But does going from 6 to 5 make the MR lose it's value?
I was in the market for a EVO recently and noticed a lot of MR's with 5 speed swap's done. It didn't seem to hurt the resell value. A buyer who knows about the 6speeds in these car's would understand why it would be swapped. So many horror story's with the 6speed's. I would think as long as you can explain why it was changed out you shouldn't have a problem selling it.
Just fix the 6 speed and drive it smooth. You dont have to shift super hard to shift fast. Evos are just like there DSM parents the tranny has a certain rythem and speed that it likes to be shifted at. If you dont shift her how she likes it youll eventually pay for it. If youre serious about drag racing the car then do the 5 speed swap. If you just like to drive your car on the road and do alot of pulls from a roll than the 6 speed is much better. I wish i had a 6 speed because I do alot of spirted driving from the 55mph roll range and the 6 speeds are way faster. Also I like to hit up all the twisty roads here and the 6 speed is just better for that. The only time the 6 speed sucks is if your over 400 hp, if you drag race, or if you like to shift too fast at high rpms into gears 4,5,6

Any thoughts on what couldve happen to the 6speed? or the situation? I do not believe it can be the TOB or clip since the trans wont go in gear with the car off and cables off the shifters.
