avoided disaster tonight.

I was heading home tonight from hanging with some friends and being cautious as I usually do at night. On top of usually being cautious at night here lately I've been overly cautios since here recently it seems I have hit alot of things with the front bumper while driving although I've been lucky and caused no damage. Well im in a 30mph zone with some douche beside me trying to get me to kick it and out of no where a shoe yes a shoe is in the middle of my lane. With no time to brake bam. I could tell from the sound it only hit my skid plate thank god, but come on a shoe? Who looses a shoe or throws it out their window? Maybe someone with one leg who got pissed cuz walmart made them buy a pair and not just one so they decide to throw it out? I keep driving and get about ten miles from home round a corner and there's two black dogs chillin like villians sprawled out in the road. I was now doing 60 so I swerved as they ran off the road. Im now thinking wtf is the deal here recently? I slow to only 50 and top a hill with tall grass on either side and what do ya know its a huge deer and it decides it wants to cross the road. I didn't have time to think I slammed the brakes and could feel the abs pulsing. I didn't hit it but the car almost died. It scared me so bad u couldn have drove a nail in my a$$hole it was so tight.

My question is I didn't have time to clutch the car when I threw the brakes on. I was to busy worrying about missing the deer and it coming through my windshield totalling my car. Can this cause any harm to the drivetrain going from around 50 to 25 or 30 abruptly without clutching in fifth?

lmao good story. Braking and stalling without clutching certainly cant be GOOD for you car, but if you dont make it a frequent thing you will be alright.

hmm.... i had 1 incident where i was in 5th going 65 and the car in front of me slammed on his brake and i had to slam on mine and did not hit the clutch.. the car just jerked and shut off 2 inches from the guys bumper... i was like omfg. So yes good question.... but that was over a year ago...and now nothing bad has happened..so the answer to your question is probably a no.

I learned how to drive manual on my evo. It came to a sudden jerking stop plenty of times (mostly at low speeds), yet I also do not race my evo either (no launching), and I have had no problems.

I have had my evo over 3 years now.

man your worried about nothing lol glad you and the car are ok after all that but if slamming on your brakes with pushing the clutch was so bad probably every car that was manual would be screwed so I highly highly highly doubt doing it one time will do anything when I have done it a few times in non evo's lol.

First off, nah man, if you do that once it shouldn't hurt the car. Second I have a story kind of like that. I was driving on I-70 around 10 an night, the sun had already gone down, and i don't know if its just my headlights but you cant see very far with them but any who I was going about 70 mph when about 100 feet in front of me there was a Bed, I'm guessing a queen size in the middle of the road. Pretty amazingly i was able to slow down and get over behind a car right next to me by time I passed it. But seriously, who drops a bed on the road and doesn't notice it? I guess I did hit a little debris, it was a wood frame and it basically exploded all over the road.

You said 50 - 25 that should not even stall the car. I sometimes drive 25 in 6th if I don't have to accelerate. The low rumble sounds cool. On Top gear Jeremy starts the FQ 400 at 30 in 6th to demonstrate how impractical the lack of low end torque is. I am sure the evo 6th is taller then the top gear of the car he raced against.
If you did stop no biggie like the others said.

Not sure if I'm reading this wrong, but it seems as though you guys are talking about engine braking? Basically leaving the car in gear while slowing down along with using the brakes. I don't believe a car is capable of slowing down fast enough with its braking system to cause any sort of damage to anything such as the motor or drive train. You would have to come to a complete stop within a few feet I believe to cause any sort of damage, such as during a collision. If you get into an accident though you more than likely will have other things to worry about lol. I wouldn't worry AT ALL about slowing down while in gear at any sort of speed. Every race car driver uses this technic when slowing down and it's how I drive on a daily basis. You obviously just have to kick in the clutch before the RPM's get too low depending on what gear you're in or else you'll stall.

Oh and I forgot to mention that unless you're doing this from high speeds and/or redline (which you shouldn't on a daily basis) it's not harmful and can actually save you a tiny bit of money in the end. Your brakes should last you a small amount longer and by keeping the car in gear during deceleration the injectors are closed as apposed to open while in neutral to keep the motor from stalling saving you a small amount of fuel which adds up each time you do it of course. In the end it's a fairly little amount altogether and may or may not be noticeable depending on the driver. At least this is what I have heard over the years.
