First trip to the drag in my less than stock EVO IX

So I've had my EVO IX for six months or so now, a few of us went out to the local drag strip this weekend. I have to say it was mixed with feelings of excitement, nervousness and adrenaline all at the same time.

Unfortunately I think I started to lose some boost shortly before going, I'm only making 15-16psi. I'm doing a boost leak test next weekend but this was our only chance to hit the track so I just ran it as is.

I understand that EVOs really aren't meant for drag but I wanted to get an idea what I could run before a started to tune, currently TBE with stock tune and only 16psi.

Well the first run I was planning on just taking off nice and easy to just get down the track but I ended up getting so excited I accidentally launched around 3500rpm.... wow did that feel and look horrible! haha, to bad for me a friend was recording it so I can relive the horror. The first run was 14.7 @ 92mph but after a several runs and getting my nerves in check I was only able to get down to 14.22 @ 100mph, I attached the slip.

I figure without full boost I'm down 30-40hp and I will be the first to admit there was some pretty horrible shifting going on, it definitely takes some skill and practice to drive AWD fast. It is much, much harder than it looks.

Now all I want to do is find my boost leak, get tuned and do it again! At the end I finally started to find the balance of feathering clutch without dumping it and getting the all to horrible clunking of my drive train which after last night probably hates me.

Anyone else have stories of their first time doing the 1/4 mile? I want to get back there and hit at least mid 13s where this car should be.

Oh trust me I know, the launch was my worst showing. I hadn't really tried launching on the street before hitting the track, figured might as well test where I get stats on how I'm doing rather than just thinking I did well.

What have people hit on stock EVOs in 60ft?

depends how aggressive you want to be, a friend of mine did 1.6 on on oem trans and clutch. Try bringing it down as low as possible without doing damage to your car. Get it to 2.0 then start making your way down from there.

if the car can only make 16psi then you have a bad boost leak and the turbo is working harder then it should.. your car is done a lot more then 30-40hp lol

I say less than stock because I have a boost leak, but mods include TBE, AEM Wideband and boost gauge.

I did bring my 0-60ft down from my first run but only ran 5 times, this last time launching around 5500 and quickly feathering out the clutch without dumping it.

I think stock evo 9 should be around 13.5, drive properly and full boost obviously so I guess I shouldn't be to surprised at my results

I had a 1.9 60' on my first ever run in my car and did a 13.0, and on my second run I had a 1.8 60' which got me down to 12.5, which is my best to date. I'm hoping to bring that down to low 12's or maybe even 11.9 next time I go to the strip.

EDIT: This is not a stock car, I'm at about 340 whp/340 wtq. Still on stock clutch though.

2-step at 5k rpm. I was slipping the clutch until the car start creeping forward, then I would quickly release it.

EDIT: forgot to mention I was also using NLTS

Just for the record so no one is confused. This is NOT on a stock car.

His car is probably down 30-40hp, definitely not a lot more. Stock IX's trap between 103-106 with a good driver. Middle of the summer you can take a MPH off of that. Add in someone who hasn't gotten the shifts down right and take another 1-2mph off. Using the 10hp = 1mph rule, I'd say 30-40 is a good estimate.

Your friend could have done that on an OEM clutch no problem, but your statement is misleading. The OP asked on a fully stock car what kind of 60's to expect.

On a bone stock car, low 1.8's to high 1.7's are good.

---------------------

If you are launching at 5500rpm and pulling 2.2 60's you are roasting the 'ish out of your clutch. Does it smell bad after a launch? Do a search on preload. On a bone stock car you can preload the car and DUMP the clutch when the light goes green. Its less damaging than what you're doing now. Do a search on preload.

In my bone stock VIII, I did a 13.1@105 on my first trip to the strip. Get that leak fixed and go back for more practice.

None the less OP you knew the car had a boost leak, your first time running it down the track, summer heat....dude you did just fine! Get your boost leak fixed soon ( don't wanna over spin your turbo) get a good tune...maybe drop your tire pressure down to 20-22lbs and give her hell...you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Just PRACTICE then practice some more lol.....and most of all have FUN!

My first time at the track with an AWD wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

It was October so the weather was fair. I ran a 13.3 bone stock everything with a 1.8 60ft. And I believe my trap speed was 105mph. It's easy to get nervous and excited while sitting there watching the tree flash but just take your time. The stock clutch won't take much abuse so I would practice in the street. The car should spike 20lbs and fall to around 15 lbs depending on elevation and such. That's good that you already have a wideband though!
Get that leak fixed and let us know how it goes next time!
