What intercooler would you recommend for my setup.

Stock Evo 9 Turbo, and possible upgrade to FP Green HTA. Max HP will be about 500hp DJ. The car is a road racing car that also hits the drag strip. I am currently on the stock intercooler, and it is just not cutting it.

I have been looking at the ETS and Buschur stuff. However I dont know what size makes the most sense for me. I dont want to go to small, but I dont want to go to large.

Let me know what you guys think.

+1 you can even keep the crash beam if you want.

I run an ETS on my car, it's a little bigger than that though.

When i bought my car it already had an ETS 4" on it and i can say i really love it,works great and no overheating,if it would have been my choice i think i may have bought the 3.5 version though, right now i'm pushing 28 psi on an Evo 9 turbo,HKS 272 cams,3" tbe,Injen licp and uicp, forge dv and more.

3.5" or 4", either way you wont go wrong and wont experience a noticeable difference in spool or anything. A 4" will still work with the crash beam.

Unless you track the car I would go with the 3" or the 3.5" but for the OP I would suggest the 3.5" or 4" since you road race.

I don't track my car so I feel like the 3" suited me and my car on stock turbo. I have done many many logs on the street back to back to back even in 95* heat and get consistent results. So if you are going to stick with the stock turbo then don't forget the ETS 3" intercooler

3.5 should be more than enough from any maker, AMS, BR, ETS, CBRD

If you plan on pushing higher boost on the stock frame turbocharger (Stock/Green/etc.) I would recommend going with the 3.5" intercooler. The reason being is once the turbo is pushed out of it's efficiency range a lot of excess heat is pushed through the intercooler. The larger intercooler will help dissipate the heat faster. The 3.5" will also fit with the crash beam if you plan on keeping it.

We also have them on the shelf ready for shipment

Thanks!

How do you know your stock Intercooler isnt cutting it. Is your engine getting really hot or something? On the stock turbo or even the FP Green i feel that a intercooler is a waste of money. I went from a stock intercooler on my FP Green to a bushur 3.5 inch and lost 27 ft/lbs to gain 17 HP. If you want the graphs ill send them to you. If i could do it all over again i would have took the money and bought other parts.

You're never going to hit 500 whp with that tiny little turbo. My FP Green Only makes 387 hp and its pretty much maxed out for 93 oct.

Get a differnt turbo or re-think your goals. For a stock turbo or even the little Green the stock intercooler will be good all day. All your doing is throwing away money and loosing TQ to gain some HP. TQ wins races not HP stay on the stocker and use your money for something better.

If i could do it all over agian i would have kept my stocker. Im on the FP Green right now.

Its my opinion that a car under 400-450 HP should run the stock intercooler because its lighter, makes TQ and isnt really going to offer any performance gains from changing it. Plus the stock undertray is super awsome, I dont care what people say about this but the Undertray keeps youre brakes cooler and keeps youre car planted when youre going over 100 MPH. The stock undertray is awsome you want to keep it.

I know i already ran my mouth alot but if youre gunna go and get a FMIC get the ETS or the AMS they are the best.

Stocker FMIC still makes for a faster car on pump gas in my opinion.

That's pretty crazy, I have never seen an intercooler lose torque. Did anything else change with the tune? Did you retune after the intercooler? The stock intercooler heat soaks pretty bad and doesn't allow for optimal timing in 3rd gear and will actually let the car knock due to the increase in AIT. By swapping the intercooler, you can advance the timing and make more power.

Larger intercoolers might induce a pressure drop(loss of torque), but you can eliviate this by turning the boost back up to where it was.

I was gonna say the same car probably lost a couple PSI with the switch to the new IC hence the torque loss noted

Why the hell would anyone upgrade the IC and not tune the car to get the most out of it is beyond my level of comprehension.

Once again-

the smaller the turbo at higher boost- the more efficient core you need because it is blowing heat-

I still stand by the fact unless its 90 degrees outside- typically there arent big gains to be had with an upgraded fmic- its the combination of the FMIC and the tuning (allowing for more boost/leaner afr/ more timing) where the power gains come from-

AMS, ETS, BR, ourselves, all make nice intercoolers-

The intercooler literally takes milliseconds longer to fill up from 3.0" to 3.5" - Some cores you might see a higher pressure loss due to an offset and staggered dense fin pack. When the air passes through it has to split multiple times which dissipates heat better, but causes a pressure drop. The OEM core doesn't have near density that our intercooler has.

Our new intercooler design incorporates more charge rows over the standard/traditional front mount which gives us less pressure drop over our competitors intercoolers but with more charge rows we have more heat transfer plates giving us a more efficient intercooler at the same time.

It's a win/win.
