Knocking sound from valve cover? HELP PLEASE!

My wife has had the car (03 evo 8) lately, and today she came home and said the "check engine" light came on and there is a knocking sound coming from the car.

I hear a knocking sound coming from what sounds like the valve cover. The only knocking i know about is from no oil. I check the oil and it is VERY low. I added about 2.5 -3 qts and the oil level seems normal now. But sadly the tick/knocking sound is still there.

I've uploaded a video of the noise, because its usually easier than me describing it. I will obviously have to take it in to get looked at, but i wanted some insight before i take it in, im not that knowledgeable about cars and don't want to get worked over. Give it to me straight Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

To check where the noise is coming from, you can use a stethoscope or even a long screw driver. With the screw driver, put the handle against your ear and touch the other end to various parts of the engine. Be careful not to get whatever tool you use caught up in a belt or anything, of course.

If it really is the top end, it's probably a collapsed lifter. Where are you located? Maybe someone can recommend a reputable shop that won't give you the shaft.

Hard to tell from the video but sounds like a lifter and also sounds like an exhaust leak. Good luck figuring it out.

if you had to add 3 qts of oil to that thing to make it ok, lets hope you didnt starve the crank, or the turbo, or the lifters. sounds like a lifter though which is better than the crank. does it stay that way while it revs or just at idle?
