fq-340 question
fq-340 question
Hey everyone, I'm thinking about importing an fq-340 for my first evo. I was wondering if anyone had any feedback as to whether it's worth going through the extra hassle, or if there is some sort of gotcha in bringing these cars state side. I'll admit, I'm kinda excited about the novelty of a right side drive
It’ll be A LOT of money, also making those power levels is easy enough with boltons. The BIGGEST advantage to a FQ340 (I assume Evo VIII or IX) as the AYC that we do not get state side. Also RHD is kinda pimp but again you would be spending a lot of cash on an Evo you could get locally.
Good luck.
Good luck.

HIGH_PSI, thanks for the reply.
Just so I'm clear, the fq-340 is actually AWD correct? By "RWD is kinda pimp", I assume you mean that during a launch all the power would transfer to the rear wheels because of the AYC?
Although I can't promise it (temptation be damned), I'm going to attempt to leave whatever evo I buy as stock. So getting an evo with higher hp would be pretty bad *** for me. Also, I looked around and it is damned hard to find any fq-400's. Are those things pretty much impossible to buy or am I looking in the wrong places?

If you want a RHD Evo... look at the gen 1's.
Also... the AYC, while awesome... isn't THAT amazing. There are a number of threads discussing its benefits and limitations if you search "site: evolutionm.net AYC" in google.

I think he meant RHD. You also won't be able to legally import an FQ-340 into the US unless it is a race only (read off-road use only) vehicle. I believe the cutoff is 20 or 25 years.

It's not worth it. There will more than likely be no warranty (if that's a concern of yours), and as someone else said, you can hit 340 (crank) hp VERY easily... exhaust and tune will put you at that or beyond, especially if you have a 2005 VIII or 2006 IX. Sure, we don't have the S-AYC, but it has some drawbacks, particularly with maintenance, as they do need to be serviced much more frequently than the rest of the drivetrain. But if you want better handling, you can just rebuild your rear LSD. There are threads about the benefits of that.
you cant get the legally registered anyways so why bother also about the fq400 comment there were only 100 produced and on top of that according to soures most of them were wrecked as the mo with this car and young adults
i believe that its not legal because of the emission output they put out and the bumpers dont have reinforcement support beams.
u can see the legal evo8 that first appeared has a bigger rear bumper with support and emission parts and downgraded power output.

the short of it is crash testing.
I agree with everyone else (because it is fact) - you could easily hit those power levels with very little money, and you won't even be pushing the motor hard. You should even be able to run a quiet exhaust without issue if you are concerned with that.
Aren't there suspension upgrades on the FQ's as well? Again, shouldn't be a problem to match/exceed with very little money and proven results.
*edit - dyamanoha, I see you are in Kirkland, WA. You should get in the NW section and start coming out to some meets. We have a pretty good community up here.
