alternator not charging with stock gauge removed in evo 8

Does anybody know what needs to be done to have the alternator charge the battery without the stock gauge unit installed? After I take out the gauge the alternator no longer charges the battery. I'm installing the AIM MXL dash and need to get that worked out.

yes I got it figured out. One way to do it is to put a 39 ohm 5 Watt resistor or a 100 ohm 5 Watt resistor between pins 9 and 19 of the C-01 plug that normally plugs into the stock gauges. Instead of a resistor you can also use just a regular 12V 5W bulb but I think the resistor solution is better because if the bulb burns then you'll have no connection between the pins and the alternator won't start. But that's for an evo 8. I'm not sure if the pins are the same for evo 9. I'll try to find out about the pins on an evo 9 and let you know.

Wth! So... if one of my gauge cluster bulbs burns out, my alternator will stop charging?

lol no they're backdooring the connection for the gauge cluster to believe its connected still because theyre using an aftermarket gauge cluster. if your gauge lights go out your alternator will still work. my speedo and gas/eng temp ones went out and the alternator still worked fine.

No, that's not going to be the case. Your stock gauge cluster aside of the bulb indicating that the alternator started charging must have a resistor that is actually responsible for starting the alternator. So if the bulb burns the the alternator will still start charging. I did a test, taking out the alternator bulb out of the stock gauge cluster and the alternator would start charging normally. I just had to have the gauge cluster connected. Without the gauge connected the alternator would not start charging. Just like warstang27 said I needed to find a way to start the alternator without the stock gauge cluster connected because I am using an aftermarket digital gauge.

ya I saw that to use 9 and 19 on the plug with a bulb. Problem is 9 and 19 are empty even though the wiring diagram shows that bulb and resistor there for the EVO9

You might just be looking at the wrong plug or counting the pins from the wrong side. Make sure you're looking at the C-01 plug not the C-02. At first I did a mistake like that, counting the pins from the wrong side of the plug and just like you said they were empty.

Check the field wire to see what the voltage input to the alt is.

Necro-revive.. but this thread saved me. I had my Evo all apart this weekend to cleanup / remove a bunch of cables that aren't being used anymore. When starting to put stuff back together, I noticed the alternator wasn't charging. Thought I pulled something that was needed. Started plugging literally everything back in that I took out.. long story short.. I didn't plug the gauge cluster back in!!! I read this thread and omg.. Had no idea it was required to have the alternator charge.
