#3 spun rod....help!

new to evos...had 1G built before this with no problems

I have a 03 2.0
with crower rods, venolia pistons aem ems gt-35r cosworth head and cosworth 272 cams

just got the car from a guy that does pretty good to alright assembly work..i trust his work about 80%
and its a fairly fresh rebuild...no more than 3k miles on the motor

First off he had hit a curb and busted the oil cooler and messed the head up...thats why he went with a cosworth head.....

The car had a crap tune so i tuned it for 30 lbs a/f's were good around 11.1-11.5 and knock didnt go past 1 volt

the other day hopped in and heard a noise above 3k rpm

oil pan off and #3 rod bearing spun......all other roads look great.....

i hear alot of people say 3 is tghe first to go when u get knock???
my knock sensor "said" nothing above 1volt
the car ran great and at 30 lbs didnt make any noises or signs of knock and the timing is not tuned real aggressive

Any ideas on how to prevent this...or shoot me in any direction??

yes the third piston/bearing is usually the first to go. if no crank journal damage has been done when checking with a micrometer then then you may replace the rod/ bearing. (im and idiot at ignored the first knocking noises and eneded up with 3 spun bearings, i needed a complete engine rebuild) point is there is no solution to making it stop just taking actions to prevent spun bearings from happening. the rod and bearing must be changed asap.

the two causes for spun bearing i know of is engine abuse or oil starvation but im no mechanic

20% will happen 100% of the time. Sorry to hear about the motor, but I would recommend changing builders to someone who does better than "alright" assembly work.

For reference, you cant change the rod and bearing and expect the motor to stay together either--you will need to have the crank done as well and likely more based on whats happened. Time to get someone in the know to take care of this.

I had this happen to mine. I have the motor out currently and a shop is going over everything and rebuilding it. My car ran great and made good power the whole time. You would of never known if it didnt have a rattle and pieces of metal in the oil filter.

Good luck...
