8k RPM. Whats the story here...

So most everyone who gets tuned ends up with a new 8k RPM redline... at least that I've seen.

My question is... Is that 8k RPM usable? Is it "safe" for our motors to rev that high on stock internals, etc.?

My tuner mentioned that I should still be shifting around 7k after my tune, and that makes sense. He said that the extra 1000 RPM is simply there if its needed.

Just trying to sort this out in my head.

I would say the stock rev limiter is there for a reason.

you can use whatever you want, i would say 8k is fine but there is always that chance something can fail...

my last year i was running my stock motor i revved that damn thing to 8500 and it never skipped a beat, but on the other hand i wasnt going to be upset if catastrophic failure happened..

some people have failures even revving to stock limits, anything can happen.

There's really no use in that high of an rpm...by the time you get to a little above 7k the powerband is not going to be that good...unless of course you're running a Turbo that is efficient up top to support the higher rpms

Ok right... I should've prefaced with... I know all of the logical answers I guess.

I understand the out of the powerband deal.
I understand that something can pop, but something can pop anywhere and everywhere.

Evo8*... my Australian friend. Yes, it is there for a reason, but post tune... you'll see why it gets moved up. My car would often hit the rev limiter, but post tune, I haven't hit it yet... Primarily because I've learned the sounds of the motor. This is in part due to learning the car, and it being maybe 100-200 RPMs too low. Hitting the rev limiter isn't the best for the car either...

My question really is... do we know how these motors handle the high RPM stuff? I mean... if it were up to me, I'd build this motor with a 12k RPM redline and let it sing. The trouble is... when your voice cracks.

The motor doesn't sound like it enjoys the 7500+ RPM range.

If you got cams and a turbo thats giving you power all the way up there... Go for it!

My current Rev limiter is at 8700.... I shift at around 8,400...

ive been wondering the same thing because at the track i go through the beams at the end of the track at 8k. If i shift to 5th it kills my time so i just stick to 4th. thats the only time i see anything above 7k no point revving it any higher on the street. id be upset if i blew it on the street and not on the track!

I have read that Reving it past 8k on a stock bottom end isnt very good for the motor. Sure the head could probably take it but the block cant. When I bought my car from the previous owner he told me since i have cams/lifters/springs and head studs my head can rev past 8k all day but the bottom end wont take much of that long. Thus i stay below 7500k. If i didnt care about my motor i would high rev the crap out of it but i plan on keeping her together untill i buy a real block that is built to rev this car to 9+k. There a section on here that talks about what the block can handle! So be carefull how you rev her if you dont want to spend extra money on a new block. Good luck.

Depending on your setup will determine how far you can push. the stock turbo at that point is out of its efficiency range at that point unless you have some cams and springs and retainers in there. Id go with your tuners reccomendation. I only raised the rev limiter for drag racing to avoid that fifth gear shift and stay in 4th through the traps.

Mine's set at 7800, I also consider it to be simply there if I need it. Otherwise no point except for the obvious/typical reasons. this may change with my install the new turbo though

Revving to 8k rpm's on a stock motor won't do anything but hurt yourself. The stock rev limiter is set there becaus that's where power falls off on stock cams. What's the point in revving the motor out more if your not making power anymore?

Leave the rev limiter alone until you do a set of cams, then you will be able to use the added rpm.

That's not a real good explanation.

The car's rev limiter is 7600 stock. Meaning that is the redline. Just because the tach has red lines before that doesn't mean anything about shifting at 7k. Even stock cars are fastest shifting at ~7500rpm.

Isn't it bad to rev much higher than stock if you still have the balance shaft in?

There is no need to squeeze a stock 4G63 that hard

Anything above 7K for me, the engine really flattens out
