Evo overheated question. Help!

I was cruising down the freeway, and noticed my car was running hot. I dont currently know why it over heated going down the freeway, maybe the water pump failed? I still have to find out the reason. But my question is, I pulled over and shut the car down, I ended up getting it towed back home. The head gasket was clearly ruined and some coolant was in the cylinders after i inspected the car a bit. What I am wondering is what are the odds I can get away with draining the coolant / oil and replacing the head gasket / head studs and being ok? I would check the head for warpage and what not, but what is your guys' opinion on the situation? Thanks.

Check the head over very well, it sounds like it took alot of heat before u shut down. I have seen valve guides come loose from the head with to much heat.

You answered your own Questions in your first post...

Rod bearings are fine. They go when you run the car with little to no oil. Get the head checked and re surfaced and a new OEM hg with some arp studs and you'll be fine.

Other than the obvious the biggest issue is the head can warp due to overheating. Other than that you're probably in the clear, it happens quite often, good thing pulling the head on these is pretty easy

Surprised no one mentioned this, but you also need to figure out why the head gasket blew. They don't just blow for no reason. Good luck.

Change your thermostat, flow test your radiator. At the very least this is considered preventative maintenance.

Check your heater hoses and the hoses going to the throttle body. Those can bust quite often if they're the original ones...I've actually had all 4 hoses bust on me *sigh* Once one goes it gets really hot really quick. Once you have it all back together pressure testing it should be a first as mentioned.

Thanks for more advice, i appreciate it. I had an issue with my first thermostat, but i then replaced it and everything was working fine. So maybe the water pump failed? I am not sure exactly what was causing the over heating. But I am also just replacing my radiator and all hoses to be safe. Thanks for the heads up on the hoses to the TB, that may have caused something? because i thought i noticed a clamp was not completely over the metal nipple the hose slides over.
