just picked my evo up last night...a few questions

hey guys...
picked up my new evo yesterday....silver, no sunroof, wing.
car runs great....i do notice the idle goes from like 950 and surges to about 1250, and then setttles back down....then does it again. and again...maybe every 20 seconds or so...idle goes to 1250 for a few secs., and goes back down....
why is this?? do all our cars do this?? hmmm.

also, the dealer told me that mitsubishi has performance parts that could give me 400hp and since its mitsubishi parts and if they do the install, it would be warranteed.....he didnt have details of course cause the service folks were off on saturday...

anybody know or have any idea if thats true or what parts or anything that hes talking about??
thanks

Did you happen to have your AC on when it was doing the idle increase? If so that sometimes makes mine idle a little higher.

How many miles do you have on it? If you have not broken in the car I would recommend that you take it easy on it for now till your break in period is over. Your tires need a break in also which could be part of why the cars *** end is swinging out. I take corners very hard in mine and have never had the rear swing out like you say you had.

If you find out what Mitsu performance parts they are talking about please let us know. I have never heard of factory parts that will let us increase our hp.

OK....rear swinging out....it's because of loss of traction. You will notice this MORE so now then in the summer. The tires are cold and are like bricks. Get yourself a winter beater OR get some GOOD snow tires. DO NOT DRIVE ON THE STOCK TIRES. YOU WILL CRASH YOUR CAR!!!

Second...Idle..might be a problem. I do not have that at all.

Third...Don't know about any performance upgrades by Mitsu...not aware of it myself but it's totally possible. Perhaps some other members can chime in here.

Congrats on the purchase....welcome to the club!!!

Yeah that too!!! Go for 600 miles BEFORE beating on the car. ALSO from what a lot of people are saying....CHANGE YOUR OIL to NON synthetic for the first 1000 miles, then change it back. Supposedly it's best for breakin periods. Synthetic is hard to beak a car in on.

If a 300 dollor car cover and a 300 dollor a piece strut bars with some 100 dollor pedals give you extra horsepower than yeah its true.

I have not heard any such thing, they are having problems warrantying their stock cars let alone some beefed up ones.

If you don't take it easy on the car, you will be one of the many who start threads saying something like "Mitsubishi won't replace my clutch or tires". "Their service sucks". "Its all their fault". "Evos have bad build quality". Etc, etc....

Point is, go easy on the car or you will WISH you had. Don't believe me? Check the 100s and 100s of threads of people who are now regretting it....

Enjoy.

i have gone fairly easy on it....but at the same time im not gonna baby it to death...ive purchased many new sportbikes and cars over the years and the biggest thing to avoid is steady high rpm.
giving it some gas during break in wont harm anything...
no, the a/c was not on during the idle surge...does it all the time. idles at around 900-950 for about 20 secs or so, the goes up to 1250 for a few secs and comes back down.
the dealer said the performance upgrades were about 3500 bucks...i told him i didnt know mits had performance upgrades like that...he said yeah....im only guessing, but for that money done by the dealer, perhaps hes talking different turbo?? i dont know. but i will let everyone know...they did say they want the aftermarket dollars. (the dealership)
as far as the *** end swinging out, i can see its a loss of traction, just surprised it felt like a rwd car at that moment

I have my evo stored for the winter. The one time I had it out (no snow or salt on the road) I hopped on it taking a right hand turn. The rear end kicked out immediately (quite fun!!!). Dragon 41673 hit it right on the head - there is NO traction with these tires under 35 degrees.

If you have your defroster on the A/C compressor is coming on too(dehumidifing the cold wet air)

Also check your tire pressure. Mine were way overinflated at 46 PSI. Maybe that's a reason the back kicked out so easily.

My car has 1,000 miles on it and it idles at 950. I thought 850 is the norm. It also does this surge when the ac is on.

Just because synthetic during break in worked for you does not mean it is the best for the car. Mitsu knew synthetic during break in would cause oil consumption, yet chose to do it anyway to cover their ***. But if you already have more than say, 50 miles on your car, I wouldn't bother swapping.
