EVO IV parts - availability in US/Canada
Hi all,
I'm entertaining the idea of importing/buying an evo iv. Now I'm in Canada, and I am looking to see how difficult is it to find replacement parts. I have no problem buying in US, as long as they are offered. I searched via google for parts but many places carry parts only from 2003+
On a side note, are there typical issues with evo's 95-97?
every car I've owned seemed to have a trait that was bad on all cars of that model (ie oxygen sensors on the sentras...)
The car will be primarily for track, but I want it to be road legal as well for the purpose of getting to the track. So I can wait for the parts to come in...technically but if my option is parts from Japan only - I may need to reconsider

Crankwalk. Overall the IV is often considered the least reliable Evo due to the changes introduced when Mitsu flipped the engine around.
If you are just using it as a track car, I wouldn't recommend a IV. There is so much stuff that you are going to simply be replacing with later-model parts. You are better off just spending the extra $$$ up front for a VI-IX.
The best source for IV parts is the UK, where they were imported legally and rather prolific.
Sometimes I wish I had financed a VII (parts commonality with the 8/9) instead of buying a beat-up IV for dirt cheap.

That. A lot of evo 4s were in imported here in NZ as they were cheap in Japan and evos are sought after cars here. Because of the crankwalk issues they had, they're now cheaper than the evo 1-3s. They're actually quite difficult to sell here, I've seen asking prices as low as 7.5k NZD ONO.
For the track I'd recommend an evo 6+. If that's not plausible, an evo 5/6 engine upgrade for the 4 will significantly reduce the risk of crankwalk.
As for parts; Japan, UK, Australia, New Zealand. Any country that is predominantly Japanese imports.

Thanks for the responses, its definitely good info!
a lot of evo 4 s for sale have later engines already fitted if you can find one with that already done they are as moddable as any other evo and also lighter ,same to drive as 5 or 6 . a friend of mine bought one recently for 3k euro he got a nice clean car no rust , brembos and a 7 eng already in .
i own a 4 for the last 8 yrs and wouldnt swap it

While this would seem ideal, it would definitely be more difficult to buy a car like that....or at least from what I've seen for sale as of recent - most are stock, maybe some basic mods, nothing as far as an entire eng swap. But thanks for the tip! I will keep an eye out for such cars
Well Vandal 99 the evo 4s are the worst evo to get motor wise as someone stated above becasue of crankwalk. They evo 5 and 6 had a revised 7 bolt that was less prone to crankwalk. beside the motor the evo 4s had a shorter gear trans and no brembo brakes so i would suggest a evo 5 or 6 for track since they got the brembos .Also concering the parts its not that hard to find parts for the evo 4,5 or 6 but the fact that they are coming from europe so the shipping is gunna be the pain in getting parts and they get pricey. i have been getting evo 5 parts off ebay from sellers, and from europe sellers but shipping is alot which is the only downside. The parts are avalible tho if you have the money.

Now, I put forged internals and use the stock crankshaft and no problem... Almost 450 whp and the motor is great!!! Is a 11 car or maybe 10.99 in 1/4 mile
.
Well in my own experience, i didn´t have problems with my engine. Before, with my imported Evo 4 (160,000 KM) I ran 12.3@114 mph with a bad traction (2 secodns in 60 ft). and the engine was good!! very good, no problems with that.

.Im definitely keeping my options open. As far as 1/4 mile times - I'm not too worried about those as I plan to track the car rather than drag.
Ive a customer running 380/376 on a stock 4 eng for the last 5 yrs hes never had a problem with it and he tracks it regularly .
parts availability shouldnt be a problem for u since u can interchange parts with the evo 8/9 that sold well in the states sourcing mechanical bits shouldnt be a problem and as far as body panels go the 4 wasnt as extreme as the later 5 and 6 so u can swap mirage/lancer bits on it since the 4 didnt have the flared fenders unless u wanna swap those on. i live in the philippines but i usually get my parts in the states and have them shipped to my folks place there and just pick em up whenever i fly back home i much prefer the newer US parts to the surplus stuff that usually ends up here. my 6 motor is pretty much a 8/9 motor now with all the parts ive slowly been stockpiling the for sale forums are the best
