are Evo engines more reliable/easy to work on than the STi's boxer?
Clutch and timing belt the STI wins.
I have a WRX as my DD and it really is not that hard to work on it. You just have to get used To the idea of pulling the intake manifold to get anything done on the engine. :-)

right now I don't have a garage so pulling a major engine component every time something goes wrong doesn't really work for me haha. The STi is a sexy beast don't get me wrong, but just too much of a PITA to work on for me right now. Plus, the Evo 8 and 9 is a sexier beast.
Clutch, and front engine components STi is the wiener.
Pretty much all else the EVO wins. The I-4 is just a much simpler, more proven design.
Subaru is just too stubborn to switch to the more reliable smoother, fuel efficient in-line. They try to justify it by stating it has a lower center of gravity. LOL.
With that said, I would still own a STi as a DD.

I have an Evo and my brother owns and STI.
Dealing with Downpipe = STI Wins
Dealing with Turbo = STI Wins
Dealing with Intake = Evo Wins
Dealing with Stock Intercooler = STI Wins
Changing Plugs = Evo Wins
Changing Clutch = STI Wins
Changing Injectors = Evo Wins
Changing IM = Evo Wins, STI is close runner up
Changing TB = Evo Wins
Changing Oil = Same
Pulling Motor = STI Wins
Doing Cams = Evo Wins by like 1000000%
Doing Timing Belt = STI Wins
So they are both about the same, they have there pros and cons. I think that overall, the Evo is a much better engine platform, and an sti is much better drivetrain platform.
I am very happy that I own an Evo, and my brother is very happy with the STI. The biggest thing I can say about both the cars, is the evo can make more HP/TQ for way less money. It seems that everything on the STI will set you back a pretty penny.

sti vs evo comparison of repair/maintenance/modification job/work time/complexity/difficulty
thanks.

Edit: I stand corrected. Good to know the crank & rods are forged

I have to disagree with "TheBoz" on the STi downpipe and turbo accessibility. My 06 STi was horrible when I had to pull the turbo as well as having the downpipe off a good 10 times.. It wasn't fun.
I'm a convert, for a couple main reasons. Maintainance, power-money ratio, and ease of use. And my 9 has so much more kick than that STi ever did.
To jump on the bandwagon and answer the OP, yes the 4G63 is 10x easier to work on. Unless you are swapping clutches.. Haha! But keep in mind, you are asking this on an Evo forum. We are bias. But we also have a couple converts to level the playing field.

Hey guys I have an 05 STi and I love it, but I'm tired of how finicky the engine is and that it's pretty much impossible to work on (fuel lines under the intake manifold, spark plugs take an hour to change, etc.) My question is, is the Evo straight 4 easier to work on? Both normal upkeep and unforeseen maintenance. It would seem to be....any info is appreciated. Thanks guys.

In any case, my older brother is a master tech, and has rebuilt a subie motor for a friend before. He vowed never to do it again because how much of a pain they are to work on. This coming from a guy who constantly worked on his 300zx, which is also a pain in the ars!
