are Evo engines more reliable/easy to work on than the STi's boxer?

Hey guys I have an 05 STi and I love it, but I'm tired of how finicky the engine is and that it's pretty much impossible to work on (fuel lines under the intake manifold, spark plugs take an hour to change, etc.) My question is, is the Evo straight 4 easier to work on? Both normal upkeep and unforeseen maintenance. It would seem to be....any info is appreciated. Thanks guys.

Chris

Well, it's easier to change the spark plugs...

This may be kinda stupid, but the way of changing a spark plug in an sti, lead me away from ever getting one. I was soo close too lol.

Did you ask this same question in the Subie forums? I bet their answers are the opposite of the ones in this forum.

Evo

Of coarse it is. After opening the hood you can plainly see the difference. The EVO looks easy to work on because it is. STI looks like a stupid design and hard to work on because it is. subi makes great things but mitsu has held the cup on this one since day one.

Never owned an STI, but I can tell just by looking at a picture of their engine layout on google they are much harder to work on.. look like a pain.

I have worked on my sisters 2.5i, it sucks, so hard to do anything, had to take off part of the intake to change the starter and plugs

I had an 05 STI and yes the Evo is much easier to work on. The only thing I have found that was easier on my STI was changing the serpentine belt.

I have an Evo and my brother owns and STI.

Dealing with Downpipe = STI Wins
Dealing with Turbo = STI Wins
Dealing with Intake = Evo Wins
Dealing with Stock Intercooler = STI Wins
Changing Plugs = Evo Wins
Changing Clutch = STI Wins
Changing Injectors = Evo Wins
Changing IM = Evo Wins, STI is close runner up
Changing TB = Evo Wins
Changing Oil = Same
Pulling Motor = STI Wins
Doing Cams = Evo Wins by like 1000000%
Doing Timing Belt = STI Wins

So they are both about the same, they have there pros and cons. I think that overall, the Evo is a much better engine platform, and an sti is much better drivetrain platform.

I am very happy that I own an Evo, and my brother is very happy with the STI. The biggest thing I can say about both the cars, is the evo can make more HP/TQ for way less money. It seems that everything on the STI will set you back a pretty penny.

One answer to the original question, depends. But mostly yes.

Try all the standard searches...FS forum here, AutoTrader, Cars.com, Craigslist, EBay, etc. Just be careful before you pull the trigger, I've seen some super shady cars out there.
