Evo 8 Engine Question.

So I had the ceramic part of the spark plug crack and blow up on me in the combustion chamber. It broke one of my exhaust valve but my pistons look great. I was wondering if you can pull the lower pan off of the car and get to the rod bolts. Trying to see if i can pull a piston while leaving the block in the car.

No, oil squrters will keep you from pulling piston out.

Honestly the piston likely is fine...it's your turbine wheel that gets jacked up when part of a spark plug goes through it

Throwing this out there........If your exhaust valve is broke, why wouldnt you pull the head to check the cylinder since you need to to replace the valve anyway?? but yes you can get to the rod bolts with the block in the car, no you cannot remove because of the oil squirters. And like "05blue8" stated, check your turbine hot side wheel, thats where problems will happen. good luck!

I'm a little confused, you said your pistons looks great, but still want to pull your piston? I've had the tip of my spark plug break on me and toasted my piston.

Yes the piston looked great. Bu it really wasnt it. I have the head off the car number 2 cylinder has a broken ex. valve. Getting replace and the head gone through tuesday. Well since the head is off and its not to much work i pulled piston two out from the top. The ring got melted to the piston so the skirt of the piston was riding on the cylinder wall. It seem like i caught it in time i will have a new piston and rings Saturday. Doing a nice hone job on it and throwing it back together. I will put up some pick shortly I would have never thought the ring was damaged from the look of the top of the piston glad i checked.

If the cylinder wall is damaged you should really have it honed at the very least. The block and head should also be decked to remove etching before it all goes back together with a fresh gasket. And when the valves are out to do the hone, you really should replace the seals too. Upgraded head studs are also a good idea as long as it's apart. None of it's cheap in the end but you either want a longevity-focused motor or you don't.

Or you can do it your way and have lower compression, more blowby and oil consumption on the one cylinder because the rings won't match the cylinder wall. Just remember that this is a $14k Evo you're doing this to and not a $3k DSM.

TL;DR: There are two ways to do motor work: right, or again.

^ Agree pull the motor and rebuild or build it. Something went wrong with engine and now it needs rebuilding simple.

Agreed that's why Im honing it and putting new piston and rings in it. As for the head 2 new exhaust valves and new valve seals maybe a valve seat and checking everything while its apart. Once it goes back together I have new head studs and new head gaskets. Not going to build this motor crazy going to buy another engine and build it that way. Thanks for the advice. I build engines and familiar with modifying cars.

Just sharing the story so if this happens to anyone else they have an idea where to start.

That really sucks that happened. But why you doing all that extra work? well unless you looking for it to make a good power number haha
