HELP identifying year of Evo 8 head!!!

How do I find out the year of my cylinder head???
Do the numbers and letters (slightly above the thermostat housing port on head) ... have any magical meaning so I can find out the exact year/model? I already know it's from a 03-05 evo 8...

I don't own a evo 8 so no smart *** replys like "check your vin #"
I'm doing a evo 8 head swap on my 2.4 and there's parts I need for the swap that are year specific.

It IS a Evo 8 head, but they're not all the same...

I need the percise year of evo 8 head I have.

Below is ALL the different production dates for the Evolution 8:

December 2002 - June 2003
July 2003 - July 2004
August 2004 - July 2005

There are minor differences between these production dates for the 8, but it's enough of a difference to matter when doing the evo 8 head swap on a 4g64.

So any help with this would be great!

Okay thanks! On stm.com they have a full gasket set for the evo 8, and it's year specific so i'm just a little confused on which one to go with.

Note:
I do not use the evo 8 HEAD gasket when doing the swap, I use the 2.4 head gasket. But I do however need almost ALL the other gaskets that come with the kit

Okay! I found out from English Racing today that I need Evo 8 water pump, to match timing marks. Do I need any other evo 8 front end parts besides the water pump when doing a evo 8 head swap on a 4g64? (front end parts = pulley's, tensioners, oil pump, ect.)

What front end parts did you use when you did your head swap?

^Hey i have a 03 galant with the 2.4 block, and to get more answers to more questions, you should go to club3g, and search for 2.4 build threads there. I'm pretty sure if your using all your stock belt driven stuff you need to use an oem 2.4 water pump, being that the offset of the pulley mount matches with what you have. I know a guy on thegalantcenter.net had to have a custom pulley made because with an evo water pump, and the offset was different, causing the belts to not line up right.
DOHC TIMING BELT YOU need is for a 94 galant gs DOHC, you can use your stock timing belt length, but I wouldn't recommend it, its too tight.
There also is a thread on club3g that entales what you need exactly for the DOHC swap

They banned my IP address and due to me having a build in router, I can't change my IP unless I had a different internet provider. Sucks I know.

You can use the evo 8 timing belt, but the 4g64 block has a deck that is 6 mm taller than the 4g63t, hence why us 2.4 block guys cannot use stock evo 8 cam gears, it would throw are timing off to much. Also the evo 8 timing belt will be very taught on the idler pulley. Why not use a timing belt designed for 4g64 DOHC? Thats my opinion.

Yeah I agree with you 100% and I know the 4g64 has a higher deck height than the 4g63. I just didn't know that when I first started this build. And one of the first items I bought was a Greddy evo 8 timing belt, now i'm regretting it because of the fact that everyone says the evo 8 belt will be a bit snug on my pulleys...

but on the other hand.... There's NO aftermarket timing belts for the 4g64 dohc ('94 galant) so with that being said, it makes me want to use the Evo 8 greddy one. it has a lifetime warrantly through hpfreaks.com and it's rated to over 1000whp so to me that sounds like a damn good investment for only $200 LOL

I just hope there's no problems with using it. I have a book called Performance 4g63, and it talks about doing the evo 8 head swap on a 4g64 block, but it says I use the evo 8 timing belt but have to remove some "anchor tensioner pulley stud" for the belt to stretch the extra little length so it's not to tight...

did you have to remove or grind down and tensioner stud???

You can use an evo timing belt but it's one rib short. Much easier to use the 4g64 belt.
