Here is something that i found interesting today and made me question if I should continue with my theme build.

About a few months ago I purchased one Tomei cam gear for my Evo online and was going to purchase the second one in a later time. Now just a few days ago I decided to purchase the other gear however it stated on their site that they weren't stocking them anymore. At the time the gear was the cheapest price shipped to my door so I attempted to ask if they can still order one for me.

Heres the conversation I had:

Reply -
"The quality of anything we do not stock has been seriously lacking in production quality and would prefer to not have to deal with purchasing any more defective product from Tomei."

Me -
"Defective? Have there been cases of these cam gears failing or what?

Your reply would be much appreciative as I am doing a build and now I'm curious to what the issues may be."

"A lot of Tomei parts are now made in China."

Ive heard Tomei parts being replicated and made in China but I never heard Tomei themselves manufacturing their products in China. Thought id share this and see if anyone has heard about this before.

Isn't Drivelinesales a Tomei vendor? Can they chime in? I highly doubt their stuff is made in China but I suppose anything is possible.

What isn't made in China these days?

I remember getting upset after I bought my Ryobi drill (Japanese company) because it was made in China. I then researched the other drills I was interested in such as a DeWalt model and a Makita (Japanese company) model and came to find out that they were also made in China.

yeah, but most people really just buy Tomei just for the sole fact it's "JDM"

Exactly correct. It comes down to the quality control of the company. It can be manufactured anywhere as long as the products are still held to the same quality. So quality of materials, machining tolerances, etc.

This is very true. Everyone's GoPro they all love so much is made in China. The computer/laptop/tablet you're posting on EvoM with is also from China.

Luckily, my Dewalt impact is from Mexico.

Everyone has the wrong misconception about items made in china... Yes most products are made in china but doesn't mean that they are bad. There are plenty of quality items produced in china. The reason they are made in china is because labor is about 10 times cheaper so it cost companies less. There are also many crappy and cheap parts made in china as well.

Agree, not all parts are bad if they're made in China but what got my attention is that they noticed the quality drop so they took it off the site. Plus some people do buy car parts with the confidence that its good quality because they are made in Japan.

I couldn't agree more. Too many folks are quick to rip into Chinese made goods because of the stigma that the parts are automatically knock off parts. If Tomei has production facilities in China then it's likely a better logistics option for them, just because a Chinese fella makes it instead of a Japanese fella doesn't mean it automatically sucks. Psh, just look at the crap that's being cranked out in Detroit and that stuff is made by Americans.

I've seen shotty knockoff parts made here in the US. DDM Hids seem to be good quality but are manufactured in the People's Republic of China

Side note: ad for prenatal vitamins? How odd.

Probably close to 99% of stuff which is "JDM" is actually manufactured in China. In fact even stuff which says "Made In Japan" on it might have been originally manufactured in China.

Japan is such a small country they don't have the manufacturing infrastructure to do very much at all. They have been outsourcing to China since before USA caught onto the trend.
