Lightweight DIY Trunk Plug

If you have either removed the spare tire because of weight, or you're like me and the dealer threw in a random useless Honda 4 lug upon sale of the car, your trunk becomes a war zone when you try to put anything in it. Here is something cheap, lightweight, and easy to do to get use out of your trunk again for your daily so you can clear out your back seat finally.

Materials: $30 for total project

9 cans of Great Stuff
Painters Tape

This stuff is great. It's $3.50 a can and is purchased and any home improvement store.

Line the spare tire well with tape.

Start filling the area evenly.

Fill it almost all the way to the top. It wont look like enough but the foam expands during the drying process.

Let it dry for about a week (takes the core a while to get hard) and remove the plug and tape then trim down to size. I used a kitchen knife.

Ta-Da! full support for anything you want to put in your trunk! Good Luck!!

that stuff will act like a sponge for water so you will have to keep an eye on it where rust is concerned

Looks good. Any reason why you didnt just make 3 pillars the same height as the stock foam pillars that sit on the spare+ the spare?

Brilliant idea! I have been pondering how to do this recently. I have seen anything from bubble wrap to pool noodles.

This should support heavy loads much better, while weighing about the same.

I like that you can easily swap the spare back in for the trips far away from home!

Honestly, trying to engineer something like that to stay upright under cornering, acceleration and while having things in the trunk might not be impossible, i just figured a solid piece of foam would work way better.

Mine weighs 1.2 pounds. The weight to effectiveness ratio of this is pretty awesome.
