"clunk" sound when shifting from 1st gear to 2nd.. What can this be??
To clear a few things up...
1. If you're having to force your car into gear, thats one thing... "force" is a relative term, and while I never have to force my car into gear, but for maybe going through the "downshift into first lockout", perhaps you're misinterpreting something. But no, it is not normal to have to force your car into gear with a knock, cold/warm or otherwise.
2. You say the car lurches when this happens? Lurching like you haven't completely disengaged the clutch? Or what?
Personally, if the problem is easily replicate-able, I would make an appointment with a QUALIFIED Evo shop, or depending on your area... the dealer (use caution), and have them look into it for you. It doesn't sound like you have the mechanical capabilities to completely diagnose the problem successfully on your own yet (don't worry, that isn't a diss... just keep learning), and diagnosing a random "clunk" on the internet is like trying to give someone a haircut over the phone.
There are dozens of things it could be, from a misadjusted clutch pedal, to a bent/broken piece of your transmission, to a shifter bushing. Better to have it examined by a professional in this case.
Bottom line, from the way you're describing this, no. It is not normal.

2. Since your post doesn't really have too much to do with this thread, it'd be wise to start a new one. But I commend you on your searching.
3. You should go post in the Lancer subforums, as this is the Evolution forums, and the cars are slightly different. Those chaps may be a bit more helpful.
