Exclamation Border crossing with heavily modified EVO

Will be needing to cross the border with my evo to get tuned by Buschur... but when I called the border on both Canadian and US border agencies, it sounds like they could give me trouble... They told me its up to the person at the time when the car is there... They asked me if its street legal.... I said yes because paperwork is legal and such.

Technically speaking, if they determined I was not legal, could the impound my vehicle? What is the worst that can happen?

First off, if I tow it down, when i bring the vehicle back, they will consider it new and charge me duty and taxes on the complete vehicle

Seccond, if I tune it in Canada and then drive down to Buschur, then I have to pay for two tunes and might still get hasseled at the border... sigh..

Has anyone crossed the border with a modified Evo or car in general?
(perferably someone with a heavily modified car)
Were you hasseled?
What was the outcome?

Any advise is greatly appreciated...Many thanks in advance
I have 7 weeks to figure this out

You might be over thinking this.....I'm sure you'll be fine. They are more concerned with people trying to smuggle drugs rather than loud exhausts.

I've crossed into canada a couple of times with my car. My car is not heavily modified but basically the normal bolt-ons. 3" exhaust and such. I had no problems with my car. When the US custom officer searched my trunk (normal procedure) he asked me if it was heavy with the wing haha.

There is a rather large group of Canadians that come to the Buschur shootout every year. Look up the dsm Quebec crew and ask one of those guys how they do it.

Crossed with non-Evo race prepared cars both on trailer as well as on road, as well as with lightly modified Evo. All cars Canadian plated. No issues. Usually good for grins and questions with the exception of one border guard that felt it necessary to point out that he hated these cars, e.g. Evos

Possible issue is when you get lots of work done across the border, the Canadians can potentially decide to re-evaluate the whole car and you pay duty on the whole car rather than the value of the work done. Probably more an issue with complete rebuild/bodywork. I unknowingly managed to avoid that as the car came back unassembled on a trailer - e.g. a basket case isn't really worth much - but this was pointed out to me by the officer. Not that it necessarily always will cost you more money but the potential hassle of having an appraisal is a headache.

I cross the border twice a year and driving a heavily modified car isn't a problem.

Now a few tons of fertilizer, that may be a problem.

If you are worried I would just put a quiet exhaust on the car. I once drove a heavily modded Dodge Turbo Diesel p/u truck across from Mexico into the U.S. It had Honduran plates, A huge Holsett HX-55/50 a 5" exhaust with a turn down right after the Nelson truck muffler, huge BullyDog injectors, a noisy dual external fuel pump, Alky injection, a tank of propane in the bed and it was noisy as hell. We hit Brownsville at 3 am and they didn't even look twice at us. Man that thing reverberated the aluminum roofing on the border check point parking structure. They didn't give a hoot. Just laughed.

Idk where you are located at in canada but crossing from alberta into montana is a 90% safe bet. There are practically zero regulations on modifications to vehicles here as long as your car can use lights, turning signals, seat belts, etc.......They are more interested if your bringing drugs across the border

Border patrol is usually pretty good as long as you're polite and mature...you know, the same song and dance when you get pulled over. I've usually gotten more questions and compliments on my Supra than anything else.
