If you actually have the cash, go in and agree to whatever financing they offer.
That way they will be more willing to drop the price down, figuring that they will make it up on the finance "kickback".
You usually don't have to make that first payment for at least a month, if not more.
Then, after you have taken delivery of the car, walk into ( or call ) the financing institution that is holding the loan, ask for the closeout price, and pay it off.

I've never seen this outside of Massachusetts, but it appears to be standard, here.
I would go to another dealership. Over here in Fairfield, the dealership don't even give you any choice on an Evo. Meaning that they put all the options that are available on the Evo by Mitsu. so the price is off the wall. I think they were asking for $39 with all the goodies like sports gauges and scuff plate etc. If you are willing to drive check out either Hayward or Capitol Mitsu. I got mine for 29. Or if you want get the 04 Evo RS. It just doesn't have the power accesories and the big *** wing and a/c. It's about 2-3K less but the same engine.
hmmm?? i always thought out the door included tax plus licensing fee and a few other stuff... that adds upto 35,000...
o well i got mine for 35,000 out the door, with cash payment at that mitsubishi in serramonte
im guesstimating that the car was at 29,000 msrp with tax plus licensing fee and other stuff... its 33,000 ???
so the dealer just gets 2,000 which aint that bad i guess... since the car only had 22 miles on it when i bought it from them.
and i just bought it like 2 weeks ago from serramonte mitsubishi.... same place u went too =P
p.s. other stuff may include some cleaning package that we bought, and some security system stuff.

I got the same run-around at Hall Mitsubishi in Virginia Beach - They were the first dealership I went to, they had a ridiculous markup on the car (something like $6-7K). I figured they'd come down from that, but I had to trade in my 2002 VW GTI 337 Edition. They came back and offered me $13,000 for it, with 12,000 miles on it. I was like OMG are you freakin nuts? The car is a year old and it's pristine! KBB says it's worth $16,500 at in GOOD condition! They said "We'll work with you, Dawg." Yeah right. Losers.
Anyway, they wasted half a day for me, so I went elsewhere and bought my Evo for a bit over invoice, with $16,500 trade on my VW.
Anyway, sorry to hear it. There are some slimy dealers out there.

**** the Daly City Mitsubishi dealership. The manager dude refuses to move on price. Even a cool salesman there trying to help me out called him an *******. I ended up going to Veracom Mitsubishi in San Mateo. Got mine for $32 otd with the 6 disc CD Changer. Paid all cash also.
dont' even consider going to a dealership where there's still a dealer mark up.. that's straight wack!
they lost your business, just go elsewhere.. you have the money, what's the big deal?

I was just stating the main idea; the financing folks are not rookies. They make their living separating us from our money.
Get the financing papers and take them home to look them over.
You are entitled to study any contracts you are required to sign, and even get professional counsel.
Call the bank ( or whoever ) and ask straight out what the loan closeout price will be in, say, 30 days.
They will know the figure right off. If they don't or can't answer, run!!
Either way you will know exactly what's up when you put pen to paper.
It's just a quick thought. Not for everone. And it may turn out to be a useless idea if all the loopholes are slammed shut.
My local dealer still has a 2500 mark up that's been in effect since last summer and they have sold many. I don't get it. But out-the-door pricing should include tax, title, license, doc fees and in Cali, first year registration. So no way are you guys getting it 29K out the door.
i just want to say thanks to all of you guys for helping me out. i really appreciate it. Man serra dealer wont stop bothering me. Keep calling and stuff man. Next week imma go dealer shopping and see who will let go for a good price. Thanks everyone for your 2 cents. Ill post up again for the result. evo rock on!

even a bmw m3 is marked up... but a bmw 330 will go for msrp...
its because its a sports car, which is why they mark up da price.
