White Smoke in Exhaust using e85
White Smoke in Exhaust using e85
As the title says. my fuel pump went out due to the use of e85. Today i got the car to start after sitting for 2 months. I had 3/4s of a tank of E85 when i parked it. but all of a sudden i have white smoke in the exhaust. Head/block were recently rebuilt and the exhaust is clearly white not blue. so i dont suspect oil. and my coolant level isn't dropping at idle or when i cruise the parking lot. car runs fine and idles relatively smooth for the amount of mods.
I know ethanol is hygroscopic but can it absorb enough water in two months of sitting to make large amounts of white smoke in the exhaust?

Blow by shouldnt be an issue since my turbo has less then 1k on it. Unless you mean another form. And either way the smoke would be blueish... Its def not coolant cause its has no sweetness to it at all. Its actually just stale not like anything i have smelt before

Yes, E85 absorbs water. It is a known fact. There isn't a practical way to test the water content either. Your best bet is to drain your fuel tank and refill with fresh E85. I believe this will solve your problems.
I had white smoke coming out at full boost and figured it was a hairline crack in the head gasket. Checked the PCV and cleaned it and haven't noticed any smoke since.
It may not pertain to OP's issue but just for funsies check it out, its an easy fix.

I dont have a pcv valve. Or egr. Intake port is plugged. And egr is plugged in the head. Valve cover is vented thru a catch can and not connected to preturbo intake pipe.
My car is far from stock. But all this was done prior to the fuel pump giving up on life and with the new pump its smoking.

E-85 sitting for two months is A long period of time. I had an issue similar to yours, one of my lines from the valve cover to catch can was pinched and I was getting thick white clouds at wot, unpinched and fixed.
I always have white puffs of "smoke" on warm up but I suspect most of it is just condensation in my exhaust burning off on start up. it always goes away after the car warms up enough, it's always more evident on cooler, high humidity days.
