Why are evos base line dynos different?

I was reading an article on this website about Vishu's stage 0 and it mentioned that the EVOs base line dynos were different as much as 10-20 WHP.

The link to the article is below. just copy and paste and it should work.
https://www.evolutionm.net/features/...rojectevo/25/4

They mentioned that it was because of the engine . As I getting an EVO in the next week (if the deal goes thru), I'm a little concerned about it.

Would appreciate any feedback.

Also, saw in quite a few magazines including Sports Compact Car that the only changes to the 04 model are options for leather recaros and 315Watt 7 speaker Infiniti sound system. Don't really care about all this, so i'm going with the 03.

Dynos are some of the problem. There are different ones and they opperate differently.

Vishnu used a DynoDynamics one (correct me if I am wrong) and they can simulate a load on the car making it seem like it is on the road when they dyno it. It usually produces lower numbers then the Dyno's others use. Some even convert the EVO and other AWD systems to front only and use a 2wheel dyno to come up with numbers....so be careful!

Vishnu claims that Stock EVO's run 200-210 whp, where as others claim Stock EVO's run 230-245 whp. So honestly who knows what the real deal is. Shiv at Vishnu seems to know what he is talking about when it comes to tuning....but so do a lot of other people.

It is not all just dynos. Evos respond much better to 93 octane than 91 octane. Bone stock the 93 octane produced 8-10 hp better than the 91. However, different dynos produce different baselines. Are you are worried that one Evo runs really strong and the next one is weak and you might get a weak one? Don't sweat that. I've been reading avidly on this forum for a while and haven't seen anything that leads me to believe that this is the case. Good luck, and don't pay more than sticker.

Ive heard that it had to deal with the way the boost comes from the factory. I heard that it ranges from 15-19 psi and isnt very consistent, resulting in not reaching the cars potential stock, stick in a boost controller and your good (provided this is true).

thanks for the responses guys. Just FYI, everyone did their dyno runs on the same dyno with the exact same mod. That's why i'm a little worried, but as someone mentioned it hasn't been brought up so far so hopefully it should be ok. Also i'm not paying MSRP. It's about a 1-1.5K below MSRP if the deal goes thru

I guess it could have to do with the knock tables in the ECU. Obviously, if one paticular car had experienced a little det., witch BTW is not always audible, it may have had some timing retarted when it made a dyno pull. Hence lower #'s than a car that did not.

There are too many variables to say that there is an exact reason for it. Its not like some cars a getting different ECU programs or anything. Its just that the ECU is so advanced, that its constantly adjusting and making changes for driving habits and other conditions. Like smogrunner said, don't worry about it. Once you get an ECU flash and exhaust. You'll be faster than any stock EVO out there. Hope this helps your decision to get an EVO. You won't regret it.

for the record...here's my case. since i got the car it always felt a lil slow...about as fast as my previous celica alltrac with some basic mods. drove my brother's evo, his was always much faster. according to g-tech, he had a good 30-40hp gain over me. installed a boost guage last week and found that this whole time i was boosting only 0.75bar peak and dropping to 0.6. did a few tests on the boost controller solenoid and found it working so i assume that either the ecu is having issues(not too likely that i've seen) or else there's some wiring issues between the ecu and the solenoid. solution for me: installed a greddy profecB and thus ran a 8.8 @80.5mph 1/8mi against a previous 9.1 @ 76.7mph. high end is also much much stronger now...

You had an All-Trac? I had two of them. I still love those cars. Here's my site. . I haven't updated the site in like 7 years

All motors have some variability. How they were broken in, tolerances of all the parts, whether they were assembled on a Tuesday or a Friday. High specfic output motors exagerate the variability. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can really do to ensure you don't get a weak motor. Buy your car, break it in properly, and 99% of the time you'll be within a few horsepower. Every now and then you'll run across a weak or a strong one.

s4awd: i had a black '91 running a t67...did 330hp on the wheels at 1.3kg/cm low boost. never got to push it really high due to a bad experience with a small pebble getting into the intake....wasn't cool. but yea...i rebuild the engine and new turbo and sold it to a friend in san francisco area. lots of memories w/ that car....and if i could i would have kept it... =(
