Octane Boost - Lifesaver or Seppuku?
Since I don't know any gas station around here that sells 93 octane any more, and a lot of country places don't even sell 91, is it safe to add octane boost to our fuel to make it more palatable for our Evos?
n.b. no, I don't use anything less than 91.

Once the car is on the stock ECU with stocking mods or properly tuned you can run it on lower octane...especially just for running regular errands. Now if its untuned for the lower fuel you have and you rag on it every day....
I would have to agree with what has been said, it is a waste of money.
Read the back of the bottle next time you see one. The biggest claims the bottles have is the amount of "points" they claim to increase. This is ambiguous as a "point" can relate to either 1.0 RON (Research Octane Number) octane points, or 0.1RON octane points.
Almost all octane boosters relate a "point" to 0.1RON octane point. Therefore, if the given product claims a 10 octane point increase, it is likely only 1.0 true octance point increase. Also, most of the products state this on their labels somewhere.
By the time you add $40 worth of unpredictable octane boosters every fill up, you could have just gotten a tune with E85 or some other type of added fuel. I CERTAINLY would not rely on octane boosters to tune on.

I personally was thinking of having a bottle in my trunk when I adventure up north as I will be tuned on 94 octane which is everywhere in the city but much more far and few between up north. I was hoping the octane booster would be a safety net in situations where I had no choice but to put in 91... which may be never happen

I admit to keeping a bottle of the stuff for emergencies.
I've never used it, but you have not truly lived until you have pulled into a town with a name like "Cow Chip, South Dakota" at 0300 in the morning, fuel light on and needle bouncing on empty, and you are either going to have to find some kind of gasoline pronto or you will be spending the night in your car.

I have heard from many enthusiasts that Torco Accelerator works great for boosting octane. I think I will be purchasing a 6-pack of these, and dump one in on a track day, for that extra piece of mind.
There is no harm in putting less than 91 octane in your tank for an emergency. As long as you are staying out of boost there will be no issues.
