03 Evo 8 extremely loud clicking noise under hood

Hello all!

As you can see I dont post much, just read and use for tech help. Ive searched around and cant find the answer. So here I go

Driving home last night started to hear loud ticking from engine bay, with window down it was actaully louder than my exhaust (3" no cat Buscher race muffler with 280 cams) I thought I had broke a lifter or something in head. Pulled valve cover off and found nothing. No broken plugs etc. I turn the motor over by hand and at every revolution of crank I hear a loud click. Sounds like its coming from either a/c cmpressor or steering pump. (1 click every full cycle of the crank) .
So I pull off drive belt and spin both a/c compressor and steering pump and they spin freely I also spin the center of a/c compressor and moves fine. There seemes to be a little notch when turning center section of A/C compressor, but barely noticeable. I also turned motor over by hand with drive belt off and no clicking noise WTF!

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks Eric

Start the motor with the drive belt removed to confirm if the noise is coming from one of the accessories or not.

No, start the vehicle with the belt off, I didn't mean just turning it by hand. You can start it to see if the noise has ceased.

It's more than ticking. The sound is extremely loud. Hard to explain sound but like someone holding a stick in the spokes of a bicycle. Sound is in synch with rpms of motor

The only reason I don't think it is because with the drive belt off the accessories the noise goes away when turning by hand. I can hear the noise with belt on turning by hand. I'm going to get valve cover back on and run without drive belt to make sure

Well good news, Started car and everything is fine. No loud ticking. Of course drive belt is off. So now im down to a couple things. Power steering pump, A/C compressor or......? In my original post i forgot to add that the a/c stopped blowing cold air a couple weeks ago. The a/c hardly gets used 2to3 times a summer. And I dont drive it in the winter. The a/c was not on when this noise arrived. Im leaning towards a/c unit Help me if you can

Thanks, Eric

Spin everything by hand the accessory belt touches.

Well i spun everything by hand, and its all good. Put belt back on and started. Clicking is back. Its definately a/c compressor. You can hold your hand on it and feel the clicking. Anyways.... a/c stopped working a couple weeks ago. After all this **** I did, its working again, But still very loud. Also notice coolant line freezing up when a/c isnt on.
Does it need recharged? Can I pull fuse to keep from engaging? Not an a/c expert Just trying to avoid the $400.00 to replace compressor right now.
Thanks, for the help
