The retaining ring is on the TOP of the tank.. So I'm not sure what you guys did wrong, or the side of what mountain you guys use to work on your car to spill 2+ gallons? I've swapped mine with the tank full and didn't spill anything.

Side issue, you can always get gas on the way there.
