Ontario drive clean 2013... LOOKS LIKE I WILL NEVER PASS AGAIN!!!!!!!! :(

So I found out today that new emissions will be taking effect jan 1 2013... looks like it may be government based facility only... will read obd2 for codes and readiness of emission components... cannot have aftermarket parts installed... This is bs considering my car is ripped apart getting a full build... far from stock fail

I will be stand alone, which means I instantly fail the obd2 scan test.... not to mention getting to any further point of the test...

I have also 'heard' that a picture of the engine compartment has to match the EPA file or fail.
Any thing newer than a 1997 that is modified is screwed

Thanks for posting about this subject.

Why do you have to be stand alone given the capabilities of the OEM ECU ?

I've seen someone offering a kit that lets you run 2 tunes with the OEM unit.
If you want to use your car other than exclusively as a track car then some level of reliability and civility will still be needed, what are you planning to do that the OEM unit wont handle ?

This OBD compliance is something I've been trying to plan for too.

The part about a stock looking engine bay is a rumour I hope, or that's a sweet kick in the stones right there.

I work in a facility that does emissions testing. With the introduction of the new standards set begin in Jan/13, the facility will be retrofitted with new equipment that does everything listed in the original post, but also, a camera is set up facing the dash to make sure the test is being done properly. I've also been told that the technician must also be on the phone (via headset) with a live agent.

The government is really cracking on emissions standards now, you know have to have special training to even talk to the public about it (my role). If an MTO agent came in and caught one of my guys talking to a customer about emissions testing and he doesn't have the proper "training", it's a pretty steep fine! Everyone in the service industry has to be re-trained, all at our own expense.

They don't call it Onterrible for nothing!

This is also the time I wish ECMLink made something for this platform. I had the capabilities to have my car emissions test ready with the simple click of a mouse!

Wow when did the Ontario government get so damned powerful? That's crazy as citizens you shouldn't stand for that.

Man doesn't the Ontario government have bigger and better things to worry about. The current etest is already far more than any other province has to deal with.

It seems like the new main changes are the obd2 and the fact they take a "photo of your engine bay" which definitely seems out of place. Other than that it seems like the same practices that have been done previously. How many years do you have to do this test?

Based on the link you set, it looks like this has been implimented for a while now?

This is the first time I have heard of this news, but if it is true you still have some time to figure things out since your car is a 2006. Also if you've done your etest recently you should be good for 2 more years anyways.

How often are vehicles required to go for emissions testing?

Your light-duty vehicle is required to have an emissions test every two years to renew the registration if:

it is seven years or older based on the model year*
is from a model year of 1988 or newer

Vehicles that are even model years require a test for registration renewal in odd calendar years and odd model year vehicles require a test for registration renewal in even calendar years.

someone in government must have good friends and investments in the emissions testing business. Why don't you register the car at another address outside of Ontario? would that work?

Insurance will screw you if you do this. I've lived in a few provinces in Canada and always make sure to register my vehicle in the correct province I am living in. I have heard too many horror stories of people getting screwed by their insurance agencies that haven't switched over registration to the new province they are living in.

Remember insurance companies will do everything in their power to screw you, so that they don't have to pay you out.

I may see if David Buschur can tune my stock ecu strickly for emission test... thats my only hope to even be able to begin the test... seeing that they scan the car now...There is no way I am removing all that **** for one test... its alot of stuff
