track racing an EVO
track racing an EVO
(1) The closest I can yet come to test-driving an EVO is on GT3.
I was just wondering how accurate its depiction is insofar as weight transfer and rotation. I was wondering if these two qualities depicted in GT3 are accurate for the real EVO:
A. If you want to rotate the butt out a bit and rotate into a turn, you to induce it by a quick jabb of the brakes. Throttle-lift doesn't seem to quite do it, nor does throttle-induced oversteer.
B. If you start understeering half-way through because you've gone in too hot and you get off of the gas to pull hte nose in, once you get back on the gas it seems to start understeering again for about a half-second (an eternity!) before suddenly gripping and pulling itself back in.
Are these fairly accurate?
(2) The open front diff ... does it contribute to these problems?

Purely my 2 cents, please don't flame.
GT3 can hardly be gauged as a "real world" simulator IMHO. The simulator favors either bad understeer or out-of-control oversteer. But then again I'm not a GT3 expert...
Anyway, my experience:
A)
Depends really. In most occassions throttle-lift works for me. Only if the car starts to understeer really bad, then a jab of the brakes is needed.
After the car was realigned to setup more camber in front, it hardly "understeers really bad", so throttle-lift (or none at all!) is all needed. Like I said GT3 favors bad understeer.
B)
The problem with GT3 is its "digital" gas. It's either on or off (i.e. WOT or no throttle). The situation you described here is conceivable if you MASH the throttle (after recovering from understeer). But you won't do that in real world (at least not me!!!!).
After recovering from understeer mashing the throttle is the last thing I want to do, because intuitively it'll result in more understeer! I will gently feed the throttle, match wheel speed with road speed.
A trick I learn in the Evo is, you can get oversteer on demand in the middle of the turn simply by flicking the steering wheel.
If you want neutral, just stick to the steady throttle. Want oversteer? Flick it, tail goes out, catch it with opposite lock and remember don't lift-off. Want understeer, mash the throttle suddenly in the middle of the turn <-- this I believe can lead to oversteer too in certain conditions.
I hear DCCD works differently: it favors RWD greatly, so oversteer on demand doesn't require a flick, just a sudden WOT in the turn.

Interesting ... and yes I know GT3 isn't the most realistic driving sim available -- try the addon for F1-2002 called GT Racing 2002 by Simbin -- but it *IS* the only "very realistic" sim that has the EVO.
As for your techniques, thank you, I can't wait to finally get my EVO and try it out.

"try out" = please do it safely
I do my "thing" purely on the track. Been to the kitty litter a few times, but that's way better than someone's front yard.
TIP: align the car. My car came with barely any camber up front, too much camber at the back, too much toe-in at the back.
Now it's more camber up front, slightly less at the back, neutral toe all around.
A SMIDGE of understeer if the tire pressures are setup for fast times, but on normal tire pressures the rear end is lively.

I find that the car tends to understeer on corner entry, but trail braking can help fix that. By "trail braking," I mean having some braking still going on as you enter the corner. It loads up the front tires and lightens up the back, so the front tires stick really hard and the back wants to come around a little. It can be hard to do -- with a car that stops as well as the Evo, I find I often brake too much, too early. And of course, when I try to compensate, it can be scary -- save too much braking and you're off in that famous "kitty litter" (gravel of you don't know what we're talking about).
Hey, here's me trail braking! Note really loaded up left front tire...and right rear looking like it's about to leave the ground!

hahhhhaha ... pay attention to the punctuation in my sentence ... that's a ... "paranthetical note" ... the "very resalistic sim with an EVO" to which i'm referring is GT3
Of course i wish GTR had one!!

Yeah, it's pace car lights. Our car was the pace car for Hyperfest at Summit Point last year. I also drove in several high performance driving school sessions, and just left the light thing on...
