bad alternator from serp belt

I replaced my serpentine belt with the shorter one because I removed the AC compressor and on my way home today I had smoke coming from the engine bay and the battery light and brake light was on so I checked out the alternator and it was scorching hot. could it have gone out from the belt being too tight.

If the belt was too tight, it *could cause issues. Did the alternator seize up?

Shouldn't have? Wouldn't shorter belt just compensate for the ac removal? The pulleys were all the same size so the alternator would still turn the same ratio in reference to the crank pulley correct?

If the spring tensioner wasn't against the stop, the tension should be the same as before. If it was against the stop, wrong size belt.

i used the belt from autozone it was 57.87" i read anywhere from 57.5-58 or so would work. its a bit tight but i didn't think overly tight. i have a mini battery and my logs showed always in the 13s and now at idle its 12-low 13 mostly 12. i just don't want to put another on to have it burn up again. it did not seize but just super heated and started to smoke from what i could see. like it had to much tension on it and the bearings went

I'd suggest longer.

If there was tension left then the belt didn't cause the alternator to fail I wouldn't think. But yes I would get a bit larger

I just don't get how everyone else is running 57.5" belts and this is bigger but too small.
