Shifter steel or stainless ?

I am looking to cut down the length of my shifter on my Evo 8. The shifter is the OEM shifter. I have cut down the length on my old 2nd gen eclipse before and welded back up and it worked great.
On my evo I would like to cut this down. My question is the shaft on an OEM shifter steel or stainless steel for this makes a difference when it comes to welding.

Any help would be appreciated
Thank you.

I'm not sure, but you can test it easily enough with any old magnet you have laying around. If it sticks, it's steel. If not, it's stainless.

Some Stainless can be magnetic actually but in the end I found the shifter was just steel.
