Doesn't the FQ400 utilize the stock intercooler?

remember the fq400 has 400hp to the crank, not to the wheels. so it probably has only around 325 or so to the wheels

yes the stocker may support up to 380hp, BUT the advantage over the stocker compared to a brand name 3"-3.5" (what id recommend for 400whp) is that they wont heat soak as bad as the little stocker. ive heard of the ebay intercooler heat soaking and the xs being worse than the stocker even tho its core is much larger. and yes you'll need a tune to make up for the pressure drop that youll most likely be experiencing

Ok, so getting a tune is recommended but what if you don't get one? Will that cause any harm to the motor?

You shouldn't have any issues with just putting a new IC on the car.

I would save up and buy ETS,AMS,Buschur, or CBRD.

I have had a Buschur(loved it- weighed nothing)
I was saving for an AMS but came along the ETS deal during the Black friday sales

Which reminds me, time to save up for Black friday deals again, LOL

One awesome thing about the Evo 8s and 9s is that you don't need to upgrade the intercooler to free up the first extra 100hp. If you're still pretty much stock, then don't worry about a fmic until you can get one worth buying.

Im upgrading to a map ef3 turbo, cams, inject etc... with a tune I should be around 450-475 whp. will a 3" ets IC be enough or should I go with a 3.5" If i want to cross that 500whp mark?

A decent FMic will show gains even on a mostly stock setup. Remember, if you're trying to make power, you've got to pay to play. Don't waste time on garbage stuff that you're going to replace in a year and never get what you paid for it in return.
