Evo performance at a price?
Evo performance at a price?
I took the wing off my Evo because I think it looks silly for an adult to have on a car. IMHO.
I use the car for the track and sometimes daily driving.
Here is my question:
I can't stand the sound of four cylinder cars with after market
exhausts.
Can I give my car a boost in power WITHOUT adding a new exhaust? Does the stock exhaust breath well enough?

As far as the exhaust, do a search for sound clips and you can find one that is only marginally louder than stock. That said I really enjoy my greddy catback and that is from someone coming from 32 valve cobras and a z06.
flnsx - I feel the same way. That is why I bought my Evo with the low wing. As for mods you should do a downpipe and an Xede or something to control your fuel and boost. Your car should not sound any louder at all, but you will probably pick up about 50HP.
Which four cylinder cars with after market exhuasts are you talking about sound bad?
Lotus Esprit Turbos?
Volksawgon Jettas?
Starion/Conquests?
Mini Coopers?
Most of the Evo's with a few mods and exhuasts have a very deep and throaty growl. There are so many 4 cylinders, with so many different possibilites, super charged, twin charged, turbo charged, small displacement 599cc to 3.0Ls, gasoline, diesel that the way they sound is dramatically different.

The Evo does not sould like a weed wacker honda civic with an exhaust. Listen to sound clips of exhausts, they are deep and mean sounding. I have just an axleback and it sounds good.
You can go with a downpipe and leave the rest of the exhaust alone, get a reflash and boost controller. But there are catbacks that are at or below stock sounds levels. Someone just posted that question.
I felt the stock exhaust was not so restrictive by looking at it. The problem areas are the downpipe and muffler and of course, the cat. Rather than getting a whole new exhaust, I went with a muffler delete pipe and getting a downpipe.
Has anyone done a comparison between the stock exhaust with just a muffler delete versus a catback system? I bet they are close. That 90 degree bend into the muffler and flapper in the muffler is where most of the restriction is. Plus, no muffler=13 pounds less.

One thing is for sure, when I hop back into the c, it feels like a cadillac, even with the H&W coilovers. All I need now is the top end acceleration of the c and I'm good to go.
