Unhappy test drove an evo-man was it noisy!

After much research and much negotiation about the price, I went to the mitsu dealer today ready to buy an evo. I went for a test drive in one with 312 miles on it and boy was it noisy! Accelerating onto the freeway, it roared and rattled as if parts were going to come off. Also, under moderate breaking, the rotors made quite a commotion. I tried a different one (with only 15 miles on it) and it was much smoother, much quieter, and more composed. The slight turbo whine was awesome. The dealer said the first one they bought at an auction and it was their main demo vehicle.
So here's my question. Was the first car just an abberation, or do evos get more noisy with time and wear? I could live with the noise level of the second car. But if it's going to be as loud as the first after a few hundered miles, a season of autocross, and a few track days, I'll pass. I already have a loud as heck, fully modded, 6-point rollcaged, supercharged car in my garage. I want the evo as a daily driver and weekend fun car.

The good ones seem to be that way from the begining, and the bad ones are usually found to be defective almost immediately as well.

Well it's already been beaten on like hell for 300+ miles, that's what happens!

The demo car I drove w/ 2000 miles on it before I got mine had more drivetrain noise than my car now with almost 12k on it.

Web, I'm in Rochester too. Did you go to Carlisle or Cortese? Or neither?

Well you have to realize like the dealer said it is their main test drive vehicle.. meaning the people that take it out don't treat it like it should.. pushing it hard, probably redlined it a few times i'm sure, didn't let the turbo cool down.. etc. if you take care of it like it should be then you should have really no problems at all.

It shouldn't. The dampening material in the mufflers should settle in after a few thousand miles.

and it was bought at auction....so you never know what it was in a former life. It may have been wrapped around a tree and rebuilt.

My car has 26k. The only rattle I have is near the passenger seatbelt. the only other noises I hear are from my intake and exhaust.

SC~

Same deal with mine at 5k miles.

You should realize the EVO is not a quiet smooth luxury bling car like alot of folks here wish. Prehaps you should go look at something softer like a SUV?

Just a idea.

Pushing it hard? Redlining it? I do both to my car on a daily basis. These cars aren't meant to tootle around at 3K RPMs all day long. On an open stretch of road I drive the **** out of my car and it loves it.

When I first got my EVO, it was pretty quiet in terms of other noises besides the drivetrain. I almost have 12k on it and now I am hearing more and more creaks and rattles. I realize it is not a luxury car and I don't mind loud drivetrain noises but the creaks and rattles just annoys me. Although it is not a luxury car, I don't think it should creak and rattle like it is falling apart.

I have noticed that the tire noise actually quiets down quite a bit from new..I think the injection nipples make a bunch of noise until worn down.
